European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Looks like I’ve missed out again then! On my Feb trip this year, I only saw the K2 on driver training duties and not in service! For those unaware, the live tracking for Brno is excellent, giving full fleet details of what’s running - you can even select vehicle types to show on the map. Sadly...

    Brexit matters

I’m not sure how a universal minimum wage would work amongst different economies. If it was universal, some countries simply wouldn’t be able to afford it, and in other countries it could have been too low for workers to be able to afford to live.

    Leipzig-Berlin train not existing

Thanks for the replies. I did forget how straightforward it is in Germany when things go wrong, in terms of ticketing. I should have remembered last time when there was disruption as a similar thing happened. I guess I’m just too used to travelling in the UK!

    Leipzig-Berlin train not existing

You can ignore or delete my above message! It was sent in a bit of a panic. DB did actually send me an email this morning which I failed to notice, advising me about this and that I could use any train to get to Berlin. So, I hastily caught the S5X (which I unnecessarily bought a ticket for)...

    Leipzig-Berlin train not existing

I’m booked on ICE2550 today, from Leipzig (09.16) to Berlin. However I turned up at the station to find out it does not exist. Apparently due to planned engineering works trains are diverted from Leipzig. It amazes me how I put hours of planning into my trips and then something like this...

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Thanks for that, good to know. Interestingly Gotha has a few be 4/8 types from 1979. They feel more modern than the 1990s Tatras they have! No doubt they have been refurbished, but the exterior design looks more modern too. Talking about Gotha, I suspect it is one of the last German systems...

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Well I’m currently in Leipzig. I spent an hour or so today observing the tram operations at the very busy Hauptbahnhof stop, as well as other main stops. This was on a weekday around 5pm, so full peak. Not a single Tatra to be found! If they arn’t coming out at the busiest time of the day, I...

    Brexit matters

I’m well aware that even places like Switzerland have deprivation. That’s really not my point though. I don’t think that ‘everywhere else is far better than the UK’. I’m not naive. But I get annoyed when some think Britain is a far better nation than others and think we can take the moral high...

    Brexit matters

Thank you for your patronising comment, but im well aware of these places you mention. I’ve been to every country you mention there, and no not just with a tour guide around the capital cities. I haven’t said there’s no deprivation elsewhere. I just said it’s rarely comparable to what I see...

    Brexit matters

But thinking about it more accurately, would it be fair for just one supermarket to charge different prices for exactly the same? That Muller yogurt could be one price in one section of the supermarket but different in the other.

    Brexit matters

I can’t contribute much to this debate, but it is fascinating to see the opinions of apologists to the government. I really don’t trust the British government to have the interests of the general British public at heart. That’s why we need something like the EU for extra checks and balances...

    Royal Photo Controversy

I always try to look at various news sources, but it’s clear to me that the BBC remains one of the most unbiased ones. It’s not perfect, but for me, there are many news sources that are too left wing or too right wing or too subservient to their owners.

    Royal Photo Controversy

“Woman edits photo” is how I imagine Private Eye will satirise this story. I can’t believe this is even news. There are so much more important things that need attention from the media.

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Still plenty of PCC trams about, as I saw and travelled on plenty back in January. They are the full allocation on routes 39, 44, 51, 97 Potentially an Ikarus, an icon of the Eastern Bloc. Think you may be thinking of Riga, as Vilnius doesn’t have a tram network! Riga has lots of Tatras, and...

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Out of interest, was it a trolleybus? They still had old Ikarus types running last spring (though I didn’t find out until I was on my way to the airport to get home!). Or if it was a bus, was it step entrance? I’m hopefully visiting Gotha next month. I’m staying in Leipzig for a couple of...

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

Thanks for this info. Thankfully I have been to Leipzig before, on a day trip from Berlin, and managed to tick off a few Tatras. I seem to remember the trailer situation was the other way around on some units - Tatras pulling modern low-floor trailers! It seems there is still a fairly large...

    Canterbury-Rochester-London and return

Many thanks to you both for this. The link didn’t work, but did bring up the website, and I entered the details myself. It does say I can’t use it for any pre-1000 departure, so would I really be able to use it on the 09.47? Also it doesn’t specify that it be able to split the journey at...

    Canterbury-Rochester-London and return

Isn’t there an issue with breaking my journey at Rochester? I’d get the 09.47 from Canterbury East, then the 12.29 from Rochester to St Pancras. This is all presuming the issues at Newington are dealt with before then, but they are due to be.

    Canterbury-Rochester-London and return

In a couple of weeks I’m hoping to travel from Canterbury East to Rochester (£11.15) to meet a friend in the morning, then up to London St Pancras (£14.70) for an afternoon hospital appointment. Will then travel straight back to Canterbury (£25.85). Prices in brackets are singles with a...

European cities with ‘classic’ bus/tram still in service

I had forgotten about Milan, so that is now on my radar. Not sure I’ll fit it in this year though. A friend is travelling to Berlin at Easter. I may join him, and go to a few other places in east Germany. I am surprised that a number of eastern Germany cities still have Tatras in service. If I...
