If a Class 442 was to be kept for charter work...

What about putting diesel power units under the coaches and running them on the West of England service Via Basingstoke and reclassifying them 742,s :)

    Mid Hants Railway Footbridges

Non of the stations including Itchen Abbas had a footbridge. Even the footbridge at Alton was a secondhand Bridge. From memory I think I read somewhere it possibly came from Guildford station.

    Mid Hants Railway Footbridges

MHR News did an article regarding about all three footbridges back in 2018/19.

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

From memory there is still some track running next to a footpath between Radstock and a village called Kilmersdon.

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Plus why are they still being moved from Eastleigh to Wolverton Works for. Can’t be cheap to move them between Eastleigh and Wolverton.

455’s aren’t much old then 442’s which should return to service sooner or later.

A bit off topic but still about Basingstoke station. Does anyone know when the down bay platform was last used. I don’t think there is any track there now and there hasn’t been for sometime from memory. thanks

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

But new isn’t always better. Just look at the class 800 compared to an HST set. Give me a HST set any day of the week. The same could be said for class 442. Always found them to be ok. Maybe a bit slow to get going compared to a 444 or 450 but does it matter. Not to me.

Train announcements with a sense of humour

Some years back on arriving at Eastleigh the guard announced change here for Pompey. Which makes me wonder how many other stations have nicknames?

Plans to reopen Totton - Fawley/Hythe (again!)

The Marchwood bypass in rush hour is a complete nightmare to travel on. Reinstating the passenger traffic could reduce traffic congestion on local roads around this area.

Plans to reopen Totton - Fawley/Hythe (again!)

What would be interesting to speculate on which rolling stock would be used. Class 230 or 159 since the line is non electrified. Class 230 could be a good possibility due to the Island of Wright receiving them or would it be more sensible to use class 159 since they are already used on the mainland.

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Sorry to ask. I understand why drivers would need refresher training on units they haven’t driven for sometime but I’m confused on the training a Guard would need before being allowed to work a unit he/she hasn’t worked on for a long period of time. Thanks

Rails in the Road - not tramways

Farnborough had a line that went along the streets of Farnborough to an airfield. The line closed in 1968.

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Does anyone know if the jump cable covers still exist or were they binned when they were removed from the units.

    Persistent railway myths, misunderstandings etc.

There are still people out there that think the 3rd rail only becomes electrified when a train goes over it.

Barry Scrapyard - Steam Locomotive Graveyard.

Only two other locos were scrapped after the 1960s at Woodham’s Those being 76080 April 1972 and 3817 March 1973.

Poll: What are your suggestions for the future redundant HST sets?

Just wonder if they could go for export.

    Diesel shunters

From memory Mid Hants Railway diesel galas run a class 08 and class 03 brake van rides. This years gala 1st to 3rd June lists 03197 and 08377. Maybe worth keeping an eye on their web site for a time table.
