Trivia - contrasting stations with similar CRS codes

Dunrobin Castle (DNO) and Doncaster (DON) are a bit of a contrast

Through the depot in service? (Yorkshire Traction, others?)

Denbigh town centre is a bit of a bus route cul-de-sac, most routes run up Vale Street to Lenten Pool bus stops, then turn round and go back down Vale Street again. Crosville used to have a depot adjacent to Lenten Pool, and as a child in the 80's my grandad used to take me from Denbigh to Rhyl...

    Llangollen Railway appoints receivers

What concerns me about Llangollen is the major infrastructure they have - the Dee Bridge and the tunnel. Neither of those are cheap or easy to maintain, and any period of neglect could lead to costs mounting up to the point where the infrastructure is unusable.

    Teeside current freight services

I used to visit one of the terminals up at Seal Sands and the track around there is long disused, if not formally closed. There are sections where site fences have been built straight across the tracks, road crossing sections which have been concreted over etc.

Loud stretches of track - past or present

Going back to my childhood, the section from Gobowen to Shrewsbury was terrible for this, especially southbound. This would be in the 80's.

Celebrities you have met and admired and celebrities that you wish you hadn't met

Back when I was a student, I was drinking with some mates in a little village pub near Huddersfield when Kevin Lloyd walked in. There was nobody else in and after initially sitting alone at the bar he came and joined us, talking cricket and generally putting the world to rights. He was staying...

Experiences of heritage railway operations post lockdown

We sampled the OP's Line 5 (Bala Lake railway) the weekend before last and found the experience very pleasant. The minimum fare was no problem as we were two adults travelling together. We bought our tickets online and just read out the reference number to the guard when they came along the...

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Ah that's a shame, I remember the old printed timetables from the 80's and 90's and it was always 110 shown on the front.

Email sent to Avanti CEO after bad experience at Stoke on Trent - thoughts

Assuming the OP is genuine, I'd cut the complaint right down and lose all the superfluous stuff about Stoke's 'beautiful Victorian edifice'. I can't see there's an issue around the OP being asked if they've got a mask, as it's a rule which is unfamiliar to the vast majority of the travelling...

Buying house near tracks / Kent House station

We back on to the Merseyrail lines near Chester, with a much smaller garden and we got used to them very quickly. There was a great improvement when the track was changed from jointed to welded so maybe check what type of track is by your prospective house? The combination of welded track and...

    EMU/ DMU Set Formations

Back in the early 90's (?) I remember several 2-car DMU's made up of one 156 car and one 158 car coupled. It was to do with brake issues with the 158's. There's a picture of one (not mine) at the top of this page http://www.penmorfa.com/Archive/sixteen.htm - the link is to an excellent site...

Non-political - how much could a no-deal affect the railways?

Long-term, things will smooth themselves out whatever type of deal we reach. But many companies, including mine, are planning for short-term supply chain disruption in the event of no-deal. If this happens, then literally every truck coming into the UK (and out, into the EU) will have to have...

Keolis Amey Wales - Future Rolling Stock

It was parked outside Chester depot this afternoon, seen from the cycle path. It doesn't wow me, it's the same generic white with coloured bits as every other operator.

    Hired-in buses

I think for these the word 'hire' is used loosely - they're repairers, so they'll effectively be courtesy vehicles being used while the operator's own vehicle is under repair, presumably 'free of charge' (the cost will be buried in with the repair cost)

    Swansea-cork ferries

Thanks for the link, I'd forgotten about those poor kids who died on the ship. Swansea-Cork has never flourished as a crossing, and probably the end of Duty Free was a nail in the coffin. Also I seem to remember there are serious draft issues in Swansea harbour?

    Wensleydale steam

I ran along Wensleydale yesterday and crossed the line in several places - there was lots of military activity at Redmire yard, army lads working round the tank loading ramp and a few vans around. Is it still used for military purposes, or were they just training for something? Also there is...

West Coast Main Line closed near Wembley (06/04)

The building owner's insurance (if there is any in place) is very unlikely to cover consequential losses - ie it would probably cover physical damage to the railway, and any other property damaged, but unlikely to cover consequential fines paid by the railway owner to operators etc. And I see...

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Sure, but my point is that in the way some classes have been handled, then surely just the act of making one type 4-car would only justify a subclass, not a whole different class? I contrast it with the 37/9's which were regulars through my home station when I was a kid - class 37's but...

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Class numbering has always been beyond me, and my main era of interest was back in thr BR days when things seemed a bit simpler. Using Merseyrail as an example, I never understood why the 507's and 508's were designated as separate classes, rather than just subclasses - when locos such as the...

HST's on West Coast Main Line

Dave Sallery's excellent site reckons HST's were running in North Wales from Sep 1991 until 22 May 2004. Some good pictures too - I've never seen the 'unofficial' livery variation on the bottom pic, are there any other pics of it anywhere? http://www.penmorfa.com/Archive/eighteen.htm
