Grand Central Fleet Replacement - Speculation

Yes, Mk5A stock is fitted with SDO. It was used regularly at, for example, Malton prior to the platforms there being extended. Do you have a source for that? I’m not aware of an announcement…

Grand Central Fleet Replacement - Speculation

Wild card: Mk5A is 125 mph capable, I wonder if a Class 93 on electric could be cleared for 125 mph? Weight might be a problem, but they are lighter than a Class 67. The Class 93 would also need fitting with the ‘CAF controls’ to allow them to operate with Mk5A but surely that is not an...

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I’m happy to be corrected, but I think the Class 93s have operated on diesel, electric (and battery?) with Mk3 stock, including at 110 mph on electric. So, that seems to cover all options passenger wise.

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

Just to add to the earlier replies regarding the new Tees-Trafford Park working: 08.02.2025 68033 0Z59 1421 South Bank Tees Dock-Doncaster West Yard There are paths next week from Doncaster West Yard to Tees Dock running as Class 4, so perhaps further wagons will be added.

'Slow living', and life in a pre-current-internet world

Some interesting thoughts already on this thread. Regarding the hobby of ‘rail enthusiast’ I have found out so much through forums such as this one, both in terms of the current railway scene and the history. These days websites such as Traksy/Real Time Trains/Gen groups and forums et al are...

    Chiltern 68 Set Numbers

But you also said: …which is materially not true. On Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays Chiltern regularly operate all four rakes of Mk3 stock (AL01/02/03/04).

How are you all coping with the £3 cap?

Agree totally with everything you have said. Previously First York offered ‘5 day bundles’ at £15.70, essentially all day use any five days in seven, ideal for getting to work. The offer has now been withdrawn leaving the option of a weekly ticket at £25 or ‘tap on, tap off’. All a complete...

Would you still be interested in Railways if…..

Yes indeed, that was the start of uniformity in Inter-City trains. Much of the previous variety was greatly reduced by the introduction of the HST. From a commercial/operational point of view the HST was, of course, a resounding success.

Why did the class 91s need a flat cab for freight operations?

Yes, I remember that. If I recall correctly it usually used what is now platform 10 at York. I think that came a little bit later, once electrification to York was completed. I guess it made sense to dispense with the need to use a Class 47. There’s a picture here showing a Class 91 with Mk2...

Why did the class 91s need a flat cab for freight operations?

There was also a working from Hull as the OP mentioned. 1A24 15:30 Hull-London Kings Cross, booked a Class 47 Hull to Doncaster, with the Class 91 working forward, slab end leading, formed of Mk2 stock. It was certainly diagrammed in the Summer of 1989, but I’m not sure how long it lasted for.

    TOC contract expiry dates

I think it depends on what other operators are in the vicinity of a driver’s workplace. As I understand it, when TPE moved from First to DOHL they immediately lost a number of drivers who had jobs lined up with freight companies.

Why did the class 91s need a flat cab for freight operations?

Hello and welcome to the forum. From the article that you quoted, I think you are possibly referring to this part: If there were not the requirement to be able to haul freight, then it is possible that the Class 91s might have been constructed in a similar way to the HST power cars and...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

I’m not at all clear what you are attempting to add to the debate through this post. I will withdraw my claim that the events of 7th October 2023 were genocide and re-word my statement as ‘7th October was beyond tragic.’ I don’t think that’s in any way ‘hand-wringing.’ How best to describe...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

Making statements and not standing by them is an odd position, unless you have changed your opinion. There are several possibilities and no you have not made clear your position. a) I support Iran/Hamas in their threats to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. b) I do not support Iran/Hamas...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

This is a point that is often overlooked. I think it is right and proper that the behaviour of Israel is examined and there have been many failings, which I think both of us have noted. What is striking though is that the behaviour of Hamas towards the Palestinians receives no mention. I find...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

Thank you for clarifying, that’s most appreciated. It seemed a bit of an odd statement to make. Having resolved this, I’m happy to share with you that I’m not from Israel, I have no business interests in Israel and I’m not Jewish either. My only connect with the Jewish people was a great...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

Why do you feel the need to speculate as to whether or not I have connections with Israel? If it bothers you so much, why not just ask if I’m Jewish? It does not matter to me as to who you are, or where you are from. I don’t believe in treating people differently because of their faith, lack...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

So to be clear: do you support Hamas/Iran in their threat to wipe out over 7 million Jews? I have already stated very clearly that I view the civilian deaths in Gaza as an absolute tragedy. That’s hardly a blanket endorsement of Israel. I think it is hardly ‘taking the high moral ground’ to...
