Does anyone know what this strange light is?

Light indicating a TSR - Temporary Speed Restiction

    Arbroath - Platform 3

I measured it off the proposed CAD feasibility file! Also measuring on Google does not take into account turnout and crossover lengths and the signalling needs that further reduce lengths. As I say I measured it accurately and made a signalling allowance based on my 35 years of railway design...

    Arbroath - Platform 3

Not sure about looping freight - you might only get around 250m usable length (from the layout I saw a while back)

Borders line (Scotland) electrification news and updates

Excuse the daft track engineer's question - Does the track gradient affect the distance the Battery Units can travel? The track gradient on Borders is quite steep (I appreciate that once you get over the summit its downhill so you get something back or don't use as much - just wondered if...

    How are speed limits set?

Correct - but the issue was calculating speed from a map - my statement still stands - ie a map does not give you all the info you need.

    How are speed limits set?

After a recent change to the relevant NR Standard unless you know the type and age of rail, sleepers, sleeper spacing, clips etc - you cannot calculate the theoretical maximum speed a curve with a set amount of cant can achieve.

    How are speed limits set?

The max theoretical speed also depends on material type also (rail type / sleepers / ballast depth)

    How are speed limits set?

I’ll save you all the OS Pain - it is not accurate enough to calculate an accurate speed (or even indicative speed) in fact the OS grid system is not accurate enough for long track alignments, hence the boffins at UCL created a thing called Snakegrid. Also for the cant pedants above 25mm of cant...

    How are speed limits set?

Good to know - still a pain in the sectional appendix and when you do the speed calcs!

    How are speed limits set?

Please also remember that rolling stock plays a part too - on the West Coast in Scotland there are parts of the Route that have 4 different speed restrictions depending on the vehicle that is using it - Pendolinos, Tilting Voyagers (I appreciate they no longer tilt), conventional non tilt...

    How are speed limits set?

There are a suite of standards that dictate track speed based on curvature, speed, cant, other associated geometry and material types. However just because the geometry etc can support speed does not necessarily mean the trains travel at that speed. There are many other factors that may...

Is there anyways to find out how many train carriages platforms can hold.

Point to note - signalling restrictions (for instance signals on platforms) may limit the length of a platform that can actually be used

    Operated stations

Scotrail must be around 360 ish

Longest section of jointed track left in the UK

It is no longer all jointed - there are stretches of CWR on the route. For instance there is a few miles of CWR at Altnabreac. Also at the low mileage end - there is CWR after you pass Clachnaharry pretty much all the way to Bunchrew. There are however long runs of "clickety clack" stuff over...

    Routeview - Who can access?

There is a cost associated with setting up a login - I work for a consultant and have a login that is paid by the company - I do not know how much it costs though - all I will say is we have a limited number of accounts - quote "due to the cost" - whatever that is! As a designer in the rail...

Lifespan/age of rails on the network

Inverurie Platform has rail from the 40's if I recall (on the line on the other side from the station building) and they were not replaced by the track doubling a few years ago. Someone above mentioned Kyle / Far North - I have seen baseplates on the Kyle line that are most definitely in use...

Abandoned lines least likely to be reinstated.

FYI - the original Very Large Paper File in the Regional Civil Engineer's Office relating to the Larkhall Branch Reopening back in the days of BR (circa 1990) actually said Stonehouse Branch Reopening on the front of it - but as I recall that was bombed out early doors because of the state of...

    Trackside Trees

Indeed you can - however the cost associated with that would be large and you would have to comply with current NR Earthwork Standards - carefully managed vegetation would likely be more cost effective.
