XC HST Leeds - Swanage farewell tour 26/09/23

I got a lovely view of the set returning to Laira via Droitwich this morning. An unusual sight and like something from a former age, with the semaphore signals.

Final XC HST (1627 Plymouth - Leeds) 18/09

...actually we did get a honk, thanks to a little torchlight - and the driver, whoever is lucky enough to be driving the last one! Those of you on board, I hope you enjoy it!

Final XC HST (1627 Plymouth - Leeds) 18/09

Off to see you pass shortly - looks like you've picked up a 10 minute delay. I've had the honour of being honked at by an HST from Dunhampstead bridge countless times, but I think this last time it will be too dark! A sad farewell.

Final XC HST (1627 Plymouth - Leeds) 18/09

That sounds a nice touch - which station was that? I'll be waving in the dark, I'm afraid!

Thanks for the info - this may be my last chance to see a HST near me in daylight!

I suppose it's possible 1V44 will revert to HST on Monday instead of 1V50? 43303/43304 have presumably got to get back to Laira somehow.

The 15.27 is still expected HST. It was the 12.27 that has been swapped for a Vomiter.

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

I am having possibly my last HST trip on my local line today, enjoying the traction of the four power cars currently in play 303, 304, 378 and 321. Tomorrow will be a day for watching from beside the tracks instead. All is running relatively smoothly so far this afternoon. Very sad to see the...

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

1E63 seems to have now terminated at Bristol TM due to a problem with the traction equipment. I did say 321 was unreliable...

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

I'm happy to be aboard 43303 + XC03 + 43357 on 1S51 having had to give up on first 1S51 then 1E63 yesterday. All running smoothly so far, and there seem to be more people on the platforms than usual taking pictures - perhaps because there will be no HSTs running for the next two days! Here's...

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

Indeed - it gave me a very pleasant surprise while I was waiting to see the delayed 1V50, leading it by about 10 minutes. I wished I'd brought a camera!

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

It's not looking brilliant... 1V44 is currently 60 minutes late due to the points failure near Sheffield. However, it looks as though it's going to run fast to Plymouth from New St, only stopping at Bristol and Exeter, in the hope of making up some time. So you may be in luck, but I'd expect...

Well done - I've never seen two at New St together! Another excellent photo.

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

That is sad. I shall miss them. I wonder whether anyone else will take them on. I assume 321 has already been stood down? I've not seen it for a few months and it always used to break down, as I recall. So that leaves (using the numbering I'm familiar with) 207/208/303/304/357/366/378/384 -...

Lovely picture! I was there myself not long ago, going HST there and back and a 150 to Paignton. Very pleasant.

Looks like it'll turn round at Newton Abbot. Then run 1S51 as usual from there.

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

Almost... 1V62 would in fact have to be about 3 minutes late for them to actually cross at the bridge because it was a Sunday. On weekdays, the northbound/southbound long-distance services (so mostly Voyagers) do cross at Dunhampstead bridge at 32 minutes past each hour, but on a Sunday the...

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

That would be nice... Assuming 1S55 is HST as usual, 1V62 also HST would make for one of the very rare occasions when the two will cross right next to where I live (you can work out where that is!). I'd definitely get over to the railway bridge for that one, if it happens. It might not ever again...

So this implies that there may be a set swap at Plymouth. Out of interest, are these swaps usually made as a matter of routine after the set's been out for a while, or because there is a fault of some sort that needs rectifying? I am enjoying riding 43378 + XC05 + 43366 southbound at the moment...

    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

I had the pleasure of witnessing 1S51 running through Durham tonight, around 40 minutes late and in reverse formation relative to yesterday. No longer very busy as I suspect an earlier LNER service has taken some of its northern customers. Hopefully it seems to be safely on its way to Scotland...
