Trivia - Furthest away you can see a train?

A passenger on a train leaving Otford towards Swanley can see trains on the SEML between that tunnel and Dunton Green, having personally seen it myself several times. I'm sure I've seen the reverse at least once as well. The distance is roughly 1.5 miles.

Spurs winning the Europa league has created quite the juxtaposition in the Premier League table: 18th is relegated; 17th qualified for the Champions League: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024%E2%80%9325_Premier_League#League_table (Image of 2024-25 Premier league table, showing Tottenham...

What’s more efficient: overhead or 3rd rail electrification?

Another issue (though one personally I'm not bothered by), is NIMBYs hate them because they are far more of an eyesore than third rail, especially in designated areas. There are also places where, to make them suitable, some very hefty remediation works and bespoke designs are required, such as...

Potential future uses for class 68 & Mk5 sets?

Maybe Chiltern could long term pursue a Class 93 additional order that can be made compatible with Mk5 sets, then combine its delivery with electrification of parts of the route in conjunction with other operators. Ironically they'd have a better chance of electrifying the non-London parts, such...

    NSE-liveried 465908 workings, photos & videos

Been back in service today on the Hayes and Sidcup lines, but apparently is the middle unit in a 10-car formation so not easy to snap the cabs.

Potential future uses for class 68 & Mk5 sets?

They're planning to build a giant vacuum wall lining through the sensitive areas ;)

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

This would explain how the reported death toll seems rather low, for a small densely populated geographical region that has been bombed into near-oblivion over 18 months, with severe aid restrictions also applied. The official death toll ranges between 35,000-55,000, but some sources like The...

    Southeastern metro fleet replacement/improvement

Tomorrow's drag is now in RTT. What's interesting about it is that, while the route is the same as recent ones, its headcode is 7Q76, not 5Q76, so is pathed to take longer and run slower (it appears to arrive at Newport around 3 hours later). This suggests the unit(s) being dragged have issues...

Southampton are looking at appointing Will Still, who is leaving Lens to return to the UK. I think Southampton Will Still be in the Championship after next season though, so wonder whether Will Still will still commit to the job: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cr7zz91ykn9o

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

It's now clear to see this is no longer about defeating Hamas (if it even was in the eyes of Netanyahu), and with an impending famine and aid catastrophe reportedly imminent (it's a miracle this hasn't already happened), previous diplomacy with Israel is no longer politically feasible. Trump...

Falklands War - Is it a bit, for lack of a better word, ignored?

I've not been to the Falklands (even from the UK it's notoriously hard to visit despite being a UK territory), but I wouldn't be surprised if commemorations of this war are a big deal in the Falklands themselves.

    Southeastern metro fleet replacement/improvement

I think the Bakerloo line stock replacement would be first priority over any line extension, and certainly a higher priority than any extension beyond Lewisham, even where a new fleet is delayed for whatever reason. Some 465s still being in service in 2035 maybe pushing it if a tender is...

    HS2 delayed again?

There was a RAIL article a while back that cited had HS2 followed HS1 and a number of European HS lines, by sharing motorway corridors, the cost would have been far lower and could well have been done by now. It may not have been as fast (300kph max), but following motorways would have saved on...

    Brexit matters

If there was an annual award for "making a mountain out of a molehill", Brexit fishing would have won it hands down several years in a row.

Trivia - Furthest away you can see a train?

From Lodge Hill in Castle Cary there is a long range view westward allowing trains travelling to/from Taunton to be seen for several miles. I haven't pin-pointed exactly how far, but Lydford-on-Fosse is probably the limit, which is 5-6 miles off.

    Jumping Barrier Incident

Perhaps we should go with one of my past (admittedly joke) suggestions: trap doors each side of the barrier. If someone tries to jump them, a supervising member of staff merely needs to press a button to open the door, the evader falls inside, then the BTP have an easy arrest. No violence...

What could have been: if the Thames Valley routes had been electrified in the Network SouthEast era

IIRC correctly FGW were actually considering keeping HSTs in their fleet at first to do the far SW services, because electrification was never due to go beyond Newbury. Then they decided to get more IETs and uprate their hp and fuel tank capacity. If NSE had electrified all their routes (except...

    Examples of unique level crossings?

Strand road LC in Preston is a notable one I think as the railway curves through the road, rather than the classic perpendicular crossing. When I cycled LEJOG in 2021, the organisers sent us over this crossing, and at least one of the group came off (fortunately not seriously harmed), as a...
