    East Coast Timetable Dec 24

So if Reading-Newcastle gets back to hourly, what is the main issue? That TPE is only 1tph? This doesn't include the Middlesbrough service, does it - so Northallerton is still well enough served. If all XC could go via Leeds, that might make a difference - it's likely more important than e2e...

Speeding up slow journeys between London boroughs

This was studied - and Walworth/Camberwell/Denmark Hill could easily fill a tube frequency service, as could New Cross Gate/Lewisham. But splitting the current frequency, it wouldn't be viable to do such a big build for 12tph each branch - even if it went up to say 15tph, it would be full -...

Reopening to Padstow would generate more traffic than reopening Tavistock-Okehampton

Would this never make sense coming from Tavistock and through Launceston? Longer reinstatement but covers another previously railway-ed town which might be less seasonal in demand. And would be quicker to Exeter / London etc - assuming Cornish and Plymouth demand could be bus-based.

Plans to reopen Totton - Fawley/Hythe (again!)

Except that it is a complete and utter lie, so there is that.

Grand Union's proposed Stirling – Euston service now authorised by ORR

And planes like Stirling, Pitlochry, Aviemore - not wildly accessible from the airports, whereas the train is super central. Pitlochry is largely a walkable town (train to pubs to hostels/BnB) - very accessible, easy weekend without a car.

Grand Union's proposed Stirling – Euston service now authorised by ORR

I wonder if another Pitlochry - London service could work - re the comment on north of Stirling. Can a service dwell/turn there? I do think Inverness could stand up 2tpd at least. Tourism in the Highlands is booming - admittedly, intl visitors usually combine with Edinburgh. But might see...

'Higher Speed' Lines by bypassing slow sections with new track

Is there a world where we move from the traditional French HS to the German approach (hybrid / higher speed but mixed sections and bypasses) - where else would even be viable to upgrade? I would say Carlisle to Carstairs (with freight interventions) as higher speed, maybe Didcot-Bristol and...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

A short double back (in this case) is not circuitous - it is quickest. I lived in Queens Park for years and travelled every other week to Manchester. Via Euston, happily. Even the few Watford calls would see me sitting on a stopper forever, and joining a slower pattern. Anything calling St...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

I'm sorry but Cricklewood is 10 mins to St Pancras. And longer to St Albans. This is double-back territory, and you have one change. Fair enough if you are starting in Harpenden or something - but Cricklewood! - that is an issue of your own making / selection. I don't see why. Bedford will...

    June 2024 Timetable Change

Would 2tph Grove Park - Bromley North with intentional feed timings (5-6 mins each way) into the faster London services be more useful than 3tph? Local journeys could also go by bus.

    New Cambridge South Station Timetable

Ahh yes of course, I mentioned indirectly re Ipswich extension, but of course if it is like 4tph from Bedford (why build for less!) - I'd expect they all call too. Maybe 1-2tph will be able to reach North or Ely (I wish it had a south-facing bay or two, for growth) - to add to the...

Should there be more Liverpool to Scotland services?

I do think that the Liverpool TTW area suffers from bad trains. For example, if the Borderlands train was direct (and quicker) - the catchment is there. Similarly, the North Wales Coast is heavily connected to Liverpool, but the direct trains haven't come about yet. So I do think there is some...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

You'll get a seat! This used to be Luton and was very easy. I expect that EWR (which will get to Bedford, if not Cambridge) - will ensure Bedford has an even larger role as a hub in future, and I'm sure will have both Nottingham and Sheffield options. And especially if the Universal...

    New Cambridge South Station Timetable

Sounds very positive re stopping. One day there is probably a future where almost everything calls South-Central-North if not terminating. To encourage those intra-city journeys and use capacity locally. Mini-Crossrail of sorts, even to Ely. Cambridge North in theory could fit another...

Should there be more Liverpool to Scotland services?

I would think in the 'other hour' - a Liverpool to either Barrow or Windermere service mightbe useful too. Although there is Liverpool-Blackpool of course. I'd prefer sending all Barrow to Liverpool and all Windermere (hourly) to Manchester Airport and simplify it. The Birmingham should cover...

    How could Lumo expand/develop/improve?

So this is the thing: A Glasgow-Newcastle seat sold precludes a more valuable London-Edinburgh one. Or is it? If a seat is sold for G-N and then 'resold' for N-L, that might be more lucrative than E-L. Keen to understand the Newcastle v Edinburgh sales and demand. I don't think York will ever...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

And the airport is not really a signficant one. 5am bucket and spades, plus the obligatory regional KLM connect. Whereas Luton has evolved quite respectably, and the people mover helps that further. I meant in a rail sense, and the classic outer intercity calls. Admittedly Luton was that, no...

    Heathrow Southern Link

Ok so I mentioned those main nodes because they are hubs/have feed. Not just residents. I didn't mention Feltham or Twickenham either in my previous post, also busy local hubs. Putney too, if it called. The train would be completely full. Seccondly, the tube from those places to Heathrow is not...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

I would do this too. Especially if Leicester gained a fifth platform. It makes way more sense and solves a lot of the bad connection issues. If Corby needs second tph, a shuttle to Kettering would be just fine. Maybe that could come from afar, like a little DMU from Nottingham via Oakham once...

Why don't East Midlands Trains stop at St Albans?

Watford and St Albans also have like 80% of their demand to London, and since the 70s, they have 8+ tph each. The service to London is far better, which covers most users. Ideally, a call would be doable. I'm sure it would be popular. I would think a Leicester EMU slow (which could alt with...
