Political discussion regarding Labour's rail nationalisation promise

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/labour-promises-rail-nationalisation-within-five-years-of-coming-to-power.266599/ Just like they promised to stop the implementation of the Beeching report in 1964, but actually went on to implement more of it than the previous...

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

And to add, so many people who I stop and go to issue a PF or conduct an interview under caution, seem so surprised sometimes, they clearly know they're in the wrong (not always, but most) as there's always "well you can use your discretion", if they know that discretion is an outcome of their...

    Are fine consequences too overkill?

Some interesting thoughts in this thread, ultimately the nail has been hit on the head a few times using the words "personal responsibility", as for members of staff being held accountable for their errors, if a member of staff completes an MG11 then they most definitely are culpable for their...

Northern Rail ticket machines - paper tickets?

It's going to become more common, Penmere and Perranwell on the Falmouth branch also issue these!

What could happen for not giving Revenue Officer my details

Strangely you are required to do so under the penalty fare regulations, but not under the byelaws or RRA. I'd hazard a guess that the officer didn't want to "go through your phone", but requested that you show them your information in your iPhone settings or asked to see some form of social...

    Fine/Prosecution advice

You'll receive a letter from SWR stating the alleged offence, they will probably also obtain a spreadsheet of your ticket purchase history from any online retailers to see whether you've done it before, if so they will calculate what they think you own them at the price of an Anytime Single for...

Years worth of rail card misuse finally found

Just to add, GWR generally do give credit for fares paid in any settlement.

    My son received a penalty.

This does seem bizarre as a Northern Ireland address can be used for a revenue protection sanction, as it is in the UK.

Fallout for rail prosecutions from Post Office scandal

Yeah great, "pay this large amount of money now, or get off in the middle of nowhere stranded". Incidentally, what was the "substantial" additional fare on top? So effectively a penalty fare, but one that must be paid on the spot no matter what, with no chance of appeal?

    Bought ticket on the train

The TOC can easily track a person through a guest account using the payment method, Chiltern do seem to be one of the more persistent operators so I suspect they will chase this up, by refusing details it creates more suspicion and will increase their desire to investigate it further.

    Class 175 future speculation

Better than a 2 car 150 though in terms of capacity

    Class 175 future speculation

The main issue with the short forms is unavailability of turbos, meaning the 4 car 150 diagrams have to be split to cover. There's a 2 car 158 on Exmouth Paigntons today

"Oops! My Rail Pass Mishap: Using a Ticket without a Valid Rail Pass" Ticket then photographed.

If the railway has your ticket details then it's very easy to track you through that, if no account held then it can be traced through the payment method used, it's something that has become "bread and butter" to railway fraud departments.

    Refused to pay

Discretion can be used, but the argument would be that with no evidence of a Railcard, it should have been more than what you'd already paid, again, I've already said what I would have done and probably what would have been best practice, but it is what it is and if you do receive any...

    Refused to pay

I'd say spotting between genuine and p**s takers is almost impossible, people are far more entitled these days and are incredibly good actors.
  16. RPI

    Refused to pay

Absolutely and it varies massively by TOC, Rail Delivery Group really need to set a standard for all TOC's to follow, on our (GWR) PF and UFN notices, there are Questions and answers on the rear of the customer copy, and it clearly states on this list that if you've forgotten your Railcard you...

    Refused to pay

From what you've said overall, I would hazard a guess that the person you encountered was a guard, sadly the training for such situations for guards isn't great at most Train Operators, revenue is a secondary duty for guards as their safety duties (rightly) take priority, but sometimes this is...

    Refused to pay

I sympathise with you, I've dealt with exactly this before, the passenger is polite, firm but fair. The member of staff, in my opinion, should have issued a notice or a report explaining that the Railcard could be produced later, they should also have explained that the excess fare that was...

    Refused to pay

Everything aside, if you have a valid Railcard then if you receive a letter or correspondence then reply with a picture of the valid Railcard, IE both parts. For forgotten railcards then I don't believe that the passenger should be charged anything at the time and personally I'll always issue a...

Lost ticket, but with e-purchase receipt and collection receipt

As others have said, the UFN was issued correctly, just to add context to the reason why a receipt, reference or anything but the actual ticket isn't accepted, its because a ticket is a bit like a £20 note, it can be used by anyone, so if you don't have it, someone else could unfortunately.
