    Duty station manager

Money isn't always the be all and end all. I don't know what you're doing now for £57k, but think about not just a cut in salary, but also what other benefits might or might not be involved, plus thing slike the work life balanbce of different roles.

I accidentally took 3 sick days during my probation !!

Great Western had a 1200 rule when I worked for them. I never missed it, so I don't know whether I'd have been allowed to return to work had I done so. Don't worry too much. I hurt my ankle when I had just started and had to take a few days off. Nothing dramatic happened, but hat was back in 1998.

SWT Guards- What is the rota pattern / Are flexible working patterns available??

We';re all massively influenced by our own experiences. I worked several years of shifts wiuht the Post Office and on the railway, and I've never done 12 hour days except by agreeing to overtime. I know people that do work 12 hour shifts, usually 4 days on and 4 days off. Thes einclude factory...

    Salary Comparison?

This thread is a bit pointless. Comparing salaries is next to impossible at the ebst of times, givne the different ecoinomies across the world. We know that countries like Switzerland are very expensive places to live, while others are much, much cheaper. Without a context there is nothing...

    Train Drivers retirement age?

I think that is probably the bottom line for most people, train drivers or not. If they think they can't afford to retire, then they will carry on for as long as they can. Having said that, the people that I know personally in the railway industry are all hoping that they can get out at their...

    Personal Statements

For the future, try and link in whatever you put into your personal statement to the person specification and the job description. When I worked in recruitment outside of the railway, common practice was to assign points for thing sin the statement that aligned with what the recruiting managers...

    GWR Management Overtime

It was the MS grade I was thinking of, as I know or knew several of them personally.

That is my understanding of how it works too.

Getting a Train Cleaning Job, Unbelievable!!!!!

I think some of the comments being made here about recruitment policies and HR are going a bit far. One of the things that interviews are for is to try and select the right person for the job. That doesn't only mean those who can actually do the work, but also those who possess a good attitude...

Getting a Train Cleaning Job, Unbelievable!!!!!

I think that some do genuinely struggle with the way things are today. A lot depends on the background of the individual, their education, skills and capabilities. For me, it's bit like how some people are better equipped for things like DIY than others are. I'm a total failure in that area...

Getting a Train Cleaning Job, Unbelievable!!!!!

I am older than you, AndyN and I don't see much evidence of 'PC nonsense' in modern life. What I do see is a culture of greater respect, with racism, ageism and sexism being confronted, rightly, so that we can all have a better life. It's arguable how effective this has been, and there signs...

    Trainee Train Driver Pre-Employment Referencing

Where I worked in this area, the final decision would have been taken by the recruiting manager. We would have offered advice and guidance, but that was predominantly on the legal side of things. I recall one instance where the applicant did not mention anywhere on the application, nor in the...

    Trainee Train Driver Pre-Employment Referencing

I do personally know of a couple of incidents where people lied about something, and checks found them out so that they never started work. I'm also aware of one or two incidents where deception only came to light after the person concerned had commenced employment. These were considered to be...

    Trainee Train Driver Pre-Employment Referencing

Where I worked, and my job included carrying out pre employment checks, we would have asked for your reference from your last job, and if other work references weren't available, we would have accepted a personal reference. Things may have changed now, and I didn't do this in the railway industry.

    Trainee Train Driver Pre-Employment Referencing

An employer needs to satisfy themselves that there is nothing lurking in the background of an applicant that would make them unsuitable for the role. References are far less important than might once have been the case, since most employers now will simply confirm that someone did indeed work...

    Trainee Train Driver Pre-Employment Referencing

References not being completed is not the same thing as pre employment checks not being carried out. As an example, the TOC might have received one or two references from previous employers although the policy is to have two or three. Pre employment checks also cover other things, such as...

    Pre employment checks

Doctors are more easily impressed by style over substance, in my experience :D And I have a lot of that as not only did I work in the NHS, but my cousin is a GP!

    Pre employment checks

The subjectivity comes in after scoring systems and notes are compared. It was always interesting to see where interviewers differed, although where I worked most of the time the notes and scores were very similar across the panel.

    Pre employment checks

I agree with your well made points, JohnFM. Structured interviews are best, note keeping is essential, but we can never really hope to attain 100% objectivity. I always found that the most important thing in interviewing for a role was to be able to support your decision with facts. A scoring...

On board supervisor - Southern Rail

I've seen this kind of thing happen in a couple of places I've worked. It isn't right, as IKB said earlier it's childish and stupid, but I also think it's human nature. I was looked down at in one job because I hadn't worked my way into the role in what some though was the 'correct' manner...
