If when booking on RSH you had selected the correct day for your return journey it would not have offered any sort of Day Return. If you leave the Return date as the same day it will default to showing you the cheapest valid day returns.

Quite. Those "stop look listen" signs at barrow crossings are reminders for authorised staff. You passed a sign specifically prohibiting you from doing what you did.
