I know I posted either a thread or reply on this topic a couple of years ago but I can't find it.

I remember noting the limits of where a £10 could take me from Wigan and back. I may have applied my 16-25 railcard too but now I can't do that. Nonetheless I share my findings which is a very much decreased range than my last report.

Origin: Wigan Stations
Limits: Meols Cop, Preston, Blackrod, Bromley Cross, Manchester Stations, Ardwick, Edge Hill via either St Helens Stations, Frodsham and Fazakerley.

I'm surprised with Frodsham in there but shocked that Liverpool stations is out by one station. Also disappointed that half of Manchester is out of bounds too given we are meant to be in TfGM territory too. I may have to have a chat with Mr Burnham.

I quite like that thought, just far you could go with £10. Not far down here in the south.

I went to Milton Keynes and back from Hemel Hempstead today with my Senior Card and it was £9.75 but I did my bike. 50 miles

An interesting idea. Given the 'anytime day return' in the topic title I made a few checks based on my nearest station (Derby) and I was shocked at how few major places other than Nottingham were accessible for a tenner (not even Loughborogh, let alone Leicester or Chesterfield). This is the entire list:

Derby - Duffield, Belper Ambergate, Whatstandwell, Cromford, Matlock Bath, Matlock
Derby - Peartree, Willington, Burton-upon-Trent, Tutbury & Hatton
Derby - Spondon, Long Eaton, Attenborough, Beeston, Nottingham, Bullwell, Hucknall, Newstead, Carton, Burton Joyce, Lowdham, Thurgaton, Bleasby, Netherfield, Ratcliiffe-on-Trent, Bingham, Aslockton
Derby - East Midlands Parkway

The net spreads a little winder with offpeaks and of course with railcards for those so blessed, but the anytime network is very disappointing - no wonder people use cars!

From here for under £10 for an anytime day return I can reach Dean or Salisbury heading west

Heading East, I can reach all the stations to Basingstoke, nothing further during the morning peak

Interesting idea.

My local station is Coseley, so obviously there are many fares available within the network area.

However, going by Anytime Day Returns alone, these are my results, with some significant price increases if you go just one station further, (for example, going on to Warwick Parkway instead of Lapworth).

Canley
Penkridge
Wellington
Hartlebury
Barnt Green
Lapworth
Danzey
Cannock
Blake Street
Coleshill Parkway

It seems if you are in a PTE area you get more bang for your buck.

We need a coding genius to see if they can go back as far as fares data will allow and plot out network diagrams showing the limits from a particular station for every new fares dataset. Be interesting to see how Wigan and other areas maps change over time.

I’ve always thought the fares from both Derby and Nottingham to Chesterfield is far too high. The Comet and Pronto bus services are far better value. Fares from Nottingham and Derby to Leicester are also high.

Try doing this same exercise with fares from Plymouth. I’m off there in a few days time and was quite surprised how almost every station throughout both Devon and Cornwall can be reached for no more than £10 for a Day Return. Also compare the fare and distance between Exeter and Penzance with Derby to Chesterfield.

Edited as I missed one off. I'm amazed at some of the prices. On one route, over £10, the further away you go along it, after a certain point, the cheaper it becomes!

I think that's your lot at 39 stations, if I've counted correctly and not missed any more.

All below prices are without railcard, despite me having a 16-25 railcard.

From my nearest station Southall, I can only go to stations as far as Greenford, Paddington, or Slough for a maximum of £10.

Hounslow is my other regularly used station, and the list here is significantly larger, even more so if routed tickets like "Not via London" or "London Not Underground" are allowed.

If I have to stick to Any Permitted only, then:
All SWR-served stations in Z2-6
Westbound to Bracknell (also to Bagshot, but nowhere on the Windsor or Chertsey branches)
Sunbury but not beyond there on the Shepperton branch.
Selhurst via Norbury
Epsom Downs/Ewell East via Mitcham Junction (also between Sutton and Wallington).
Crystal Palace and Tulse Hill via Streatham Hill
West London Line (Imperial Wharf to Shepherd's Bush).

When routed tickets are allowed (both where Any Permitted doesn't exist and where a routed ticket is within the limit), you can add:
Every single station served by Southern, Southeastern, or Thameslink within Z2-6 (including Kentish Town to Elstree & Borehamwood)
Entire NLL and ELL (plus associated South London branches)
Stratford to Lea Bridge or Manor Park
Essex Road to Finsbury Park

On the other hand, if travelling beyond Slade Green/Barnehurst/Crayford to Dartford, your cheapest Anytime Day Return goes from £9.40 to £24.40, an increase of almost 160% if going just one more station :o Similar happens at Merstham which is £24.10, when Coulsdon South is just £9.40 (only a 156% increase there ).
