Hi,

TfL publicity appears not to state anything on the subject of whether minimum fares have any bearing on the availability of railcard discounts on Oyster PAYG fares.

I understand that the railcard discount is not available on morning peak fares (before 0930 on weekdays). On the rail network outside of London, a 16-25 railcard is still unusable for short trips until 1000 on weekdays, because of the £12.00 minimum fare.

Does this mean the 16-25 railcard discount is also unavailable through Oyster PAYG until 1000, or do TfL begin applying the railcard discounts at 0930 without regard to minimum fares?

On Oyster, off peak fares are discounted when you have any Railcard loaded.

There is no discount on peak fares.

Peak fares are generally 0630-0930 and 1600-1900. Check the Single fare finder as there are some exceptions.

Therefore, it is usually cheaper to use Oyster PAYG (but not when making a journey in the evening peak, if you are not doing (m)any other journeys that day)

echo what yorkie says. The discount applies to anything off-peak, so fares are discounted before 0630 as well as from 0930. In addition, anything after 0930 counts towards the discounted off-peak cap, so you only lose out between 1600 and 1900 if you aren't going to cap.
