Today, believed to be for the first time, a class 195 (195023), has ventured north of York on the ECML, as part of Northern route refresh for York based drivers.

The unit worked north as 5Z90 0955 York to Newcastle, and is currently heading south as 5Z92 1308 Newcastle to York.

I could well be mistaken and probably be corrected but I believe the end of the CAF outsourced maintenance has occurred or is occuring soon. I know it was extended at the point of tools having to be downed at Newton Heath. Just putting two and two and getting five could potentially mean that Heaton now will be able to take on some of the heavy work that Newton Heath is currently snowed under with.

As said I could well be wrong but there doesn't seem any other reason (currently) for 195s to Newcastle. I don't think it will be a route refresh as such more likely a test of the 195 for route clearance. York already sign the route and traction. :)

A few drivers have moved into the link at York that signs Newcastle. 5Z** runs are usually training runs so probably just route learning specials. If a 158 was unavailable it makes sense to run it anyway rather than cancel it.

Heaton won't be maintaining 195s any time soon.

I may be mistaken but I think 155s are the usual traction for these daytime 5Zxx paths between York and Newcastle.

I'm surprised paths exist for 75mph 155 units on the ECML, especially on the mostly 2 track section from Northallerton.

There’s a 20 to 25 minute gap in services after the **55 or 56 Scottish LNER on most hours. LNER have filled some with the York to Newcastle services.

It was only unit available for the regular driver route refresh.

It was a 158 every day last week. 155s have showed before but not as often

Whenever I've seen these workings they've been 158s. Saw a 150 on it once, but never a 195. Are there any pictures of the 195 north of York out there?

A quick check on Flickr finds this photo, there is at least one more:
