3x 158 set at Roby station.

While on the 05.50 St Helens to a Lime Street, I spotted what looked like 3 sets of 158 EMR trains stationary at Roby, no passengers.

Was it broken down or parked up on ECS movement ?

It seemed unusual.

Actually four sets on weekdays, a 2.5 hour ECS from Nottingham to Liverpool to form 1L06 to Norwich at 0649 and 1L07 to Norwich at 0748.

Yes it was short formed on the day that you saw it. It would be quite cosy from Warrington Central onwards in whichever train was formed of 2 cars.
