Hi guys,

So I was getting the train from Liverpool Street to Chelmsford just now and I accidentally used my oyster on the barriers to the platform instead of my GA smart card. It opened the barrier but I didn’t go through I waited a second and then used my smartcard.

How do I get rid of that erroneous tap-in? I don’t wanna get charged a full fare or something or other..!

Thanks!

Call the Oyster helpline and explain that you used the wrong card. They may ask for evidence, but usually they'll just refund the entry charge.

Thanks, did that! Is that the kind of thing you could also do with an online account?

No. You can fill in a missing touch, either in or out, but you can't remove an erroneous touch.

I think if you use your Oyster by mistake, the best course of action is to go through the barrier and then tap straight out again. Someone will correct me if i am wrong.

Provided you don't do it more than once in a 7-day period.

In terms of minimising the charge, yes. But you can still get it all back so not a lot of point.

If you tap in and out at same station with 2min you get a maximum charge as I found out when I tried to recify a similar issue.

I did get my maximum fare refunded but had to ring TFL.

Thanks everyone. I’ve registered my account online now, and phoned them to get the erroneous touch in removed

What is the maximum charge?

A higher than usual charge applied to an Oyster / contactless card if a journey isn't tapped both in and out (including using the same card and device). From tfl.gov:
If you don't touch in and out, we can't tell where you've travelled from or to, so your journey will be incomplete.

As we can't work out the right fare for your journey, we'll charge you the maximum fare:
All stations in Zone 1-9 Peak: Up to £8.90. Reading Peak: £26
[etc]
