Advance + PAYG used in combination - valid for delay repay or not?

I traveled today Birmingham to Bridgend using a combination of an XC Advance to Newport, then onward from there on the next available TFW service using pay as you go. The train from Birmingham was near enough on time into Newport. The train from Newport to Bridgend was delayed due to signalling issues and eventually arrived around 40 mins late at Bridgend.

Is this valid for a delay repay claim from TFW for the entire journey? If it makes a difference the TFW train was showing 8 minutes late when I tapped in at Newport but was further delayed between Newport and Cardiff.

Out of interest, would it make a difference if the service had already been advertised as being over the 15 or 30 minute delay repay threshold before I tapped in?

You can claim delay repay with a combination of tickets for a through journey. Whether TfWs system will accept a combination of eTicket/paper and contactless, I don't know.

There's a philosophical discussion on here about whether or not tapping in for the original departure time is required in order for you to make a DR claim (ie. to show you were there). Some TOCs have been arguing that, but on what basis is unclear.

If your originally planned itinerary included the TfW connection and obeyed the minimum connection times, you are entitled to DR whether or not the service was shown as delayed when you ultimately tapped in. You must have intended to take that service, however. Hopefully this won't be a controversial point for TfW.

Others may know whether you need to email TfW, or if their DR form will accept your combination of tickets.

Ok, thanks. I will try and see what they say. Can't do anything at the moment as the PAYG has got confused with my tap in at Newport, so will have to sort that first.

If, on arrival at Newport, you tapped in pretty much immediately it would be difficult to argue it wasn't one journey.

On arrival at Newport I immediately tapped on the inside of the gates. I didn't realise they distinguished between entry and exit, so I've ended up with two incomplete journeys, the system thinks I've exited at both Newport and Bridgend with no corresponding entries, and given me a penalty charge. Going to have to try to explain that to customer services before I can do anything else. My mistake I guess.

That's very common, I can't think of any PAYG systems where gateline touches aren't directional.

Obviously standalone readers are different.
