Agencies don't seem to have any work at the moment?

Hi, I was able to get on a course whilst I was out of work through the job centre.
An NVQ level 2 in railway engineering and track maintenance. I enjoyed the course and from talking to people I got the impression that there was an abundance of well paid work in the industry as a trackman.

However I have called up three or four agencies and they'll all say "We don't have anything on at the moment". Obviously I am a novice on a blue hat, but that really shouldn't be a problem, should it?

I have contacted the following:

  • Cleshar
  • Mcginley's
  • Keltbray
  • Balfour Beatty

And a couple of local small companies. Typing in "railway work agencies" into the internet brings up loads of generic recruitment agencies which isn't exactly helpful.

I am near the Kent coast so perhaps it's a regional thing.

Not really sure how to proceed as all the companies I've spoken to have seemed pretty darn unhelpful and useless.

Have you tried network rails own web site?
Got a couple applications in with them mate, been waiting a month for one so far, just says

"Application under consideration for assessment 2"

And it has stayed like that for several weeks now.

I want to make some money in the meantime and can't really keep waiting for Network Rail, besides experience will stand me in good stead if I get an interview, which is looking unlikely at the moment.

Ive just had an interview with NR, not for a similar position but still entry level.

My advice would be prepare to give examples of how you’ve previously demonstrated the Non Technical Skills (NTS) and brush up on NR safety policy (google both, and look on other parts of this forum)

The main part I imagine will be safety based and probably some technical skills being as you have a qualification.

Mainly though just relax. They’re not there to catch you out, they’ve already invited you for an interview, so just convince them that you’re the right person for the job.

Hope my limited advice helps and very best of luck to you :D.
