A 323 has hit the dirt in the up siding at Alderley Edge, resulting in trains running single line on the Down Wilmslow between Chelford and Alderley Edge. Pictures anybody?

I nipped down to have a look (I live in Alderley). Also went to Chelford to see that 'end' of the diversion. The 323 was in the up platform at Alderley at the far end, the wheelset at 'Wilmslow' end of the train was up on a 'skate'. The single-line ops were very busy - queues of Pendos in both directions waiting to pass, some dragged by 57s (why?). I saw a Milford Haven train, several Voyagers, and at least one Crewe - Manchester local pass while I was there, as well as a 60 on a freight. I think the Stoke line is closed for scheduled work today, so that single line Alderley - Chelford was humming!

What I can't understand is why the 323 wasn't left, or put, into one of the Alderley sidings, so the main up line could be left clear?

I have been up to Alderley Edge too. 323235 sitting in the up platform, all trains using the down, including all Virgin/XC services, as well as Arriva TW and Northern services to Crewe. Also includes Virgin services to/from Liverpool due to possession on WCML at Weaver Jcn. Northern's Southport-Alderley Edge service starting at Stockport, bus shuttles Stockport-Alderley Edge via Cheadle Hulme, Handforth and Wilmslow.

The points into the reverse siding at Alderley Edge have been damaged, so no trains can use the up line, or the line into the up siding. This will be repaired in an emergency possession tonight, due to finish at 0630. Tomorrow morning's 1R03 0521 Manchester - London will be diverted via Macclesfield, with a bus being provided Wilmslow - Macclesfield. The first 2 local trains from Crewe - Manchester will be restarted from Wilmslow, with bus connections from Crewe to Wilmslow calling at Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Goostrey, Chelford and Alderley Edge.

No reason has yet been given for the derailment to 5H22 (0012 Alderley Edge - Stockport Carriage Sidings) last night, currently being investigated.

I dispatched 323235 last night on the 0001 to Alderley Edge, so was a bit shocked to learn that this happened so soon after I had got rid of it!

Thanks Mintona. I did note the red light clamped to the up line, but didn't twig that track damage was the reason.

The line really isn't having much luck today! The 18:52 Euston to Manchester (1H51) struck a person just south of Wilmslow station - a matter of minutes after passing through Alderley Edge!

No, it didn't? Gawd, I'm glad I wasn't working, if there is one thing I don't want to happen whilst I'm on it's that. Mind you, I'm on at 0500 in the morning, so I should really be sleeping right now.

EDIT: Just popped down to Wilmslow station. 390011 was the unit involved, driver reported striking a man just to the south of the station itself. Rucksack with personal belongings left to the side of the track. Looks like a suicide, though possibly a member of P Way staff. I'm not going to start speculating.

Incidentally, as I was leaving the station, 323230 dragged 323235 north wrong line towards Stockport (323235 being the unit that ended up in the dirt at Alderley Edge last night)

Any further info on the fatality? Nothing in the local paper this week - wondered if it was a suicide or not.

Anymore news on the details of the derailment, Mintona? :)

I don't think so. I've not seen 323235 since it happened, so I am guessing it is on Longsight being repaired. I'm not prepared to say what caused the derailment over a public forum, sorry.

Not a problem at all! I understand perfectly.

I've noticed that the East siding rails have been taken away at Alderley, one at the end of the siding and the other at the points which joins the South Bound line with the siding itself so I'd speculate it's something to do with the points.

But as you rightly point out, it would be best not to ask you until further details have been disclosed.;)
