Andermatt Switzerland line closures due to derailment and snow

Am 23. Dezember 2024 ist am Oberalppass der mit einem Orion-Triebzug geführte R45 der Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn entgleist.

On December 23, 2024, the R45 827 (Disentis/Mustér - Andermatt) of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB), which was driven by an Orion multiple unit, derailed at the Oberalp Pass between Andermatt and Dieni.

At the time of the derailment, there was heavy snowfall and there is no information about injuries. The vehicle affected is said to be the MGB ABeh 8/12 303. However, as a result of the incident, the route between Andermatt and Dieni is interrupted until further notice. There is no replacement transport for the trains on the R45 line and the Glacier Express.

The heavy snowfall is also causing disruptions on other MGB routes, and the Furka car transport service has been suspended. The current situation can be found on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn website.

Looks like this having an impact on Glacier Express etc.

Another derailment in Switzerland reported between Lauterbrunnen and Wengen with no ETA for reopening. If I can get an official source I'll post it here. This might disrupt those headed for Xmas holidays. Interlaken-Grindlewald-Wengen might be feasible alternative.......?

You can indeed go the long way around on the train (though it's very expensive). You can also go the cable car route via Maennlichen which is quite scenic and nice for those making the journey.

Lauterbrunnen to Wengen reopened this morning. Not sure when Andermatt route is reopening.
