I am sure this must have been asked before, but could not find anything in 'search'

I have a new android phone, and wondered which is the best app to download for train times.

Also any other railway apps that may be of interest.

These do not have to be free, as none seem to cost a lot, and I would rather have the best one than not.

thanks

There is an official National rail enquiries one that is quite good, can't book tickets with it though. If you want to book tickets tpe/virgin/xc all have free apps, plus i'm sure others do too.

Might be a bit out of your way but Finnish railways have a real-time map of passenger workings:

http://www.vr.fi/fi/index/aikataulut/junatkartalla.html

and mobile app versions at http://www.vr.fi/fi/index/palvelut/mobiilipalvelut/junat_kartalla_mobiili.html for Symbian, WP7/8, Android and iOS*

*though to be honest your phone's browser should render most pages anyway so most apps are just the convenience of not going via a browser...

I have a German one called "Offi Stations" that from your GPS location works out all the nearby bus stops and railway stations, then tells you all the upcoming services from each one. I find that quite handy.

Personally I use the paid-for (£3.49) app developed by Thales (who are behind the some of the National Rail data infrastructure). You can buy tickets from within the app, but I haven't done this so can't rate that feature. Generally very useful.

PS - Don't forget the app for these forums, which can also be accessed via the Tapatalk app if you use that instead.

I use the Scotrail one which is quite useful as I used it when I was on my holidays near Carnforth for when I was at places like here

and here

but it seems to be the same as the Cross Country - which I did have before I found out about the Scotrail one - so I would assume it is the same as the other TOCs and they all cover Live Trains and Ticket Prices for most of the UK

I have the free version of the National Rail app, its good, but it tends to crash whenever I slide the keyboard out (using a SE Xperia Mini Pro). Otherwise I just use the NatRail website I can keep the results on the page, close the browser and do other things without having to search again

Thetrainline-based systems are by far the best for Android phones. It's the only good thing about Thetrainline!

It is a reliable app, has excellent timetabling and live departure board information, has the ability to book most train tickets and even has some useful TfL information. It is used by CrossCountry (the one I have installed on my phone), First Great Western and First Capital Connect, to name a few.

The only bugbear I have with ALL ticket booking apps is that they don't allow you to specific a via point. I hope Thetrainline will fix this in due course.

I'd recommend you to try DB Navigator.
It can show timetable data for most of Europe including the UK and has the handy facility to store favorite journeys and station departure times for off-line use which can be very handy.
The only downside I've found is that the current version seems not to like some devices running ICS.

I just wish that there were an Android version of the old Windows Phone DB Rail Navigator which stored the complete (almost) timetables for most of Europe for use offline. I'd pay good money for an Android version of that.
