1.....

Mirrlees JVS12T power units were originally used for class 30's. Over time, these proved prone to metal fatigue and repair was not economic. The locos were re-engined with English Electric 12SVT power in the mid sixties to become class 31.

2) Don't know, as I'm not clairvoyant.
3) BREL Doncaster.
4) Departmental locos.
5) Preserved diesel and electric locos registered to run on the mainline (though not shunters).

If the 56 question relates to the UK mainline then about 5 but if it also includes the European mainline it is more.

4) It is departmental locos and not "test trains", as a test train may be formed of MU stock which would not be classified as Cl97. Likewise, whatever stock is being hauled as part of the "test train" would be numbered in it's own range.

It's not often that I recommend Wikipedia as a source of authoritative information, but in this case it is correct.

Sorry to be a pedant (again).

...and if one of the locos was to die a horrible death 'in the next few weeks', then that would make your answer to question two totally void
