I hold an anytime single from Gipsy Hill to Stansted Airport, valid via Any Permitted Route. I have plans for tomorrow but don’t know if my ticket would allow this and don’t fancy poring over the routeing guide at 11 pm.
I wish to travel via national rail from Gipsy Hill to St Pancras Thameslink. I’d like to spend an hour in the British library before taking the tube to Liverpool Street and the train to Stansted. Would this be allowed on my ticket (which contains a cross London transfer) or am I stretching the permitted routeing? Thanks!

Taking Thameslink to St Pancras is valid, you can go either via Elephant and Castle, using the routeing point of Tulse Hill and map FH, or via London Bridge, using the routing point of Crystal Palace and map BR. You can continue on Thameslink from the last London Terminal using the Maltese Cross portion of your ticket and interavailability, so for the journey to the British Library it is absolutely fine.

However by going to the British Library you are technically breaking your Cross London journey, which is allowed at any Zone 1 station, however you are not permitted to resume the cross London portion of your journey. Of course how this could be enforced is another matter, as you must pass through the Thameslink gateline at St Pancras, then the separate London Underground gateline, there is no way of knowing how long the journey between the two took.

From a routeing perspective your proposal is absolutely fine to be done via Thameslink, from a breaking the journey perspective the worst case is you have to tap for the journey between Kings Cross and Liverpool Street after the library.

Ok, I’ll be chancing it and worst case scenario cough up the £1.50. Thanks!

You may know this, but your ticket would let you use the Underground to Tottenham Hale if you wished, instead of Liverpool Street.
