Hello

Daft question time again - hope nobody minds me keeping on coming up with the stupid questions these days, it's just that I've started travelling by train a lot more recently after not doing so for quite a while...

The leaflet for the Network Railcard says that you can get get 1/3 off Anytime Day Travelcards.

Without wanting to sound daft, when are these valid? Anytime sort of suggests anytime, but the leaflet also says you can travel from 10am?

Is it an Anytime ticket that you can only use after 10am?

If so does the anytime ticket offer any benefits as against an Off Peak Travelcard?

you cannot use the Network railcard to get discounts for travel before 10am on weekdays.
you can use an off-peak travel card after around 09:30 depending on your starting station (most routes it is valid on the 1st train to arrive in London after 10am), but would have to wait until after 10am to start your journey to get the additional network railcard discount.
you can use an anytime travelcard at any time, as the name implies but again you cannot get the railcard discount until after 10am.

If your route is subject to evening peak-hour travel restrictions (e.g. FCC services out of Kings Cross & St Pancras northbound between 16:30 and 19:00) then buying an anytime travelcard lets you travel home during this period when an off-peak ticket is not valid.

This ticket is called "Anytime", therefore it can be used at any time, providing the time is after 10am  (but not if there's a full moon and your name is Frank. Break of Journey may, or may not be permitted, check with Indian call centre for details. Top secret simple Terms & Conditions apply, enquire at ticket office for details. Offer subject to Status. Errors & omissions excepted. Check before travelling. Subject to status. Offer may be withdrawn without notice. Seats subject to availability. Ticket contain traces of nuts. If you lose your ticket or your railcard you will be issued with a fine that isn't a fine that will cost you roughly the equivalent of the average wage that our call centre staff get paid in a period not less than 6 months.)

Yeah. I'm getting these feelings.

I used to be quite well up on this game, but it's too hard now and it's too hard to get information. I tried phoning Virgin to ask what off peak times from Euston were, and all they wanted to do was tell me what time I could get the cheapest train on a certain day.

I got a Virgin leaflet from Euston today that did give that info, but also offered the worrying suggestion that you can't always break journeys on certain trips from Scotland, without specifying what the restrictions are. Gah. :(

Where can I do a foundation degree in buying a cheap train ticket?

Loving the small print,

I guess I'm not the only one who finds the 'Simple' fares not 'Simple' at all, but yeah as they said 10am onwards is all the validity because they like to make money from the rush hour!!

In London I think its about to get a whole lot more complicated. On the Oyster trial on Southern between London Victoria and Balham you are charged a peak fare for traveling in the evening peak period. This is apparently a trial before its rolled out to the whole nr network in the GLA area.
I've also heard of schemes to ban national rail off peak tickets for cross London Journeys in both peak periods in zone 1.
Theres also a scheme wherby travellers from outside of the Network Area will be charged a London Arrivals tax of £8 to 10 similar to that charged by the airports.
The tax will include a complimentary single journey within zones 1 and 2.

If that happened, the Kenny O trains would become wedged! (Kensington Olympia counts as "Not London")!

Maybe they could say that Ken O is in London if you get off at it, but that it's not in London if you just go through it? After all, London and Not London are not mutually...

I think even ATOC wouldn't try that!

I think that there are medium term plans for Earls Court, Holland Park and Kensington Olympia to move into Zone 1 and Shepherds Bush to become a zone 1/2 station. Im not sure that there are any Not London tickets left on the route certainly all the tickets from Southern stations became Any permitted or Kensington Olympia just after XC pulled out of Brighton. I think responsibility fro all London NR have been or will be transferred to GLA/TFL so ATOC wont have any say.
