I am currently still in the running for a Trainee Train Driver position although I don't hold much hope as I see how long and difficult the process can be. I platform position has come up with the same TOC. Does anybody know if i'd be ruining my chances by doing a separate application?

Many thanks

Speaking personally I don't really think it should matter a bit, when I got my invitation to the concentration tests and interviews for my current job I had 3 applications in all for the same TOC, Customer Service Assistant, Trainee Driver and Trainee Conductor. I was ruled out of the driver job halfway through the recruitment process for trainee conductor, which is the job I ended up getting. I would say it's definitely worth maximising your chances and applying, you dont want to miss out altogether should be unsuccessful with the driver role as it's so so difficult to get in! Good luck!

There is absolutely no harm in submitting multiple applications for the same TOC. The only jobs to be mindful of are trainee drivers & trainee conductors. You can only have one application on going at the same time & if you fail a application some TOCs will give you a six month exclusion for re-applying. Merseyrail are quite strict with all their vacancies. I had an interview for a office based role a while back which I didn't get. I was then told I couldn't apply for ANYTHING with them for six months.

Thanks for those responses. The Trainee Driver job is something that I don't really want to hold out for as I'm aware of how difficult it is to be successful in the application. So what you're saying is, I can apply for other things but be careful not to mess it up?

I’ve applied for Trainee Conductor and Trainee Driver and sometimes multiples of these with two different companies in the past and currently, and I’ve never seen or heard anything to say you cannot apply to more than one safety critical role. Where is this written? Do you know which companies follow this rule, in case it’s one I have or may apply to? Cheers

Some companies implement then un-implement this rule as franchises change, and the only indication is in the application progress.

"Do you have any other live applications for traincrew with this company?" often gets asked on the application start page. Others demand no further applications from candidates for the next six months - but unless you see it in black and white, you should assume that no such rule applies at that operator.

The only blanket rule (used to be) on the operational staff assessments (aka OPC, Group Bourdon, Scaaat, Khaaan etc)... these are generally maximum two goes in a lifetime, minimum six months apart - although I've seen that rule waived a lot recently - especially as by law, candidate data must be deleted after a certain time.

I failed at the paper sift for a trainee conductor role with Northern in April 2019. I received a pro-former type letter stating I had been unsuccessful and I couldn't reapply for any up coming conductor roles for six months. Fast forward to October 2019, I failed the paper sift role again for another trainee conductor role and again I was told the same again.

If you apply and fail at any stage, chances are that you cannot apply for the same job with the same company. If you're just talking about submitting multiple applications and have not been sifted out, there's no issues generally. If you fail psychometric testing for Guard or Driver roles then you cannot apply for the respective post again for a period of 6 months across the board (at any TOC/FOC).

Having seen some of the shenanigans over the years with Northern, I'd take their refusals with a pinch of salt. There is currently nothing in place demanding you wait six months before re-applying, nor anything stopping anyone regardless of ability from applying in future - other than colourblindness, BMI or drink/drug habits. We've also seen a number of candidates brought through, which we are convinced were only put onto courses for sheer comedy value, whilst other perfectly good internal and external candidates were knocked back. Besides, back in the mid 1990s, I was told by a manager that, quote, I "would never work as a guard with any operator, and that's final". Okay, I think I'd best stop my train and kick all these passengers off then :)
