Does anyone know if there are any bus operators who are still operating any of these types of buses in public service?

• Dennis Dart SLF Alexander ALX200

• Dennis Dart SLF Caetano Compass

• Dennis Dart SLF Caetano Nimbus

• Dennis Dart SLF East Lancs Myllennium

• Dennis Dart SLF East Lancs Spryte

• Dennis Dart SLF Marshall Capital

• Dennis Dart SLF MCV Evolution

• Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK1 (Any Length)

• Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK2 SPD 11.3m

• Dennis Dart SLF Wright Crusader

• Optare Alero

• Plaxton Primo

It has been years since i have seen any of these in public service and i would like to take a ride on some of these again so i am wondering if any are still in use?

A good number of those types are near extinct now besides preservation, mainly due to the DDA laws. As I’ll mention quite a few times, bustimes.org will be of great help (and can be used for everything I’ve mentioned apart from Red Rose) when tracking down rarer buses like these!

Nimbus Darts can still be found on Jersey and Guernsey (the latter only a few). The Jersey examples seem to be mainly for school services though can be tracked on bustimes.org and do see normal service. What may be the only step entrance Dart / Pointer Mk1 you’ll find in service is the converted open top example used for Jersey sightseeing tours - see https://flic.kr/p/2eFUAZ4). There’s some Nimbus Darts still in use with First Glasgow, someone more local can hopefully fill me in what services they can be found on.

Your best bet for Myllennium Darts is the examples with Southdown Buses, who use four of the LK55 registered ‘Project Pegasus’ examples on their services around Surrey, particularly the 409 and 410 routes are regular haunts (something on my to do list!). There’s also some similar examples with Lloyds Coaches, again maybe someone can fill me in on what these do.

For East Lancs Spryte Darts there’s one with Little Gem/Go Goodwins which sees use on tendered routes in Greater Manchester, particularly the 260/1/2 around Sale looking on bustimes.org (see https://bustimes.org/vehicles/275209). There’s also two with Red Rose Travel around Aylesbury (Y358/359LCK). I think anything goes in terms of allocations with the Aylesbury Red independents, but if you download the Mytrip app, you can see them tracking on a map with vehicle reg plates (Red Rose aren’t currently on bustimes.org).

For MCV Evolution bodied Darts, again you’d be worth a trip to Aylesbury, as Redline and Red Rose Travel both have a few there. Recently Hulleys of Baslow have acquired some London examples from Metroline, they seem to be appearing on most routes, and being the Peak District I’m sure would prove an enjoyable day out. The other ones that may be of interest are two at Hedingham in Colchester, which are strangely 6-cylinder engined examples (I don’t know of any other such MCV Darts?).

Super Pointer Darts have been thinned out recently with the last Cardiff Bus and (former) Arriva examples retiring a few months ago. There’s two WJ52 registered examples left in use with Plymouth Citybus, though I understand they are sadly due withdrawal by the end of this month, due to impending service cuts. The third of the Aylesbury Red companies being Red Eagle can now get a mention for SN53AVK, a one time Lothian example which they normally use on the 61 service between Aylesbury and Dunstable. Select Bus Services have SK52OJG, another former Lothian one, which you’ll normally find on Stafford locals, or the 877/8 to Wolverhampton. Occasionally Moving People use Y177CFS, yet again ex Lothian, on their 33 service in Blackburn. There‘s probably more of these to find if you know where to look.

I can’t think of any Wright bodied Darts still in use, another DDA casualty, but you may be interested in a pair of former First Devon (latterly at Somerset) WK02 plate Volvo B6BLE/Wright Crusaders that occasionally see use with Ashcroft Travel around Runcorn.

The easiest way to sample a Plaxton Primo would likely be KX08HMA with Whippet on the St Neots Town services, which it sporadically operates. There’s a few others listed on bustimes with Holmeswood Coaches, Ulsterbus and West Coast Motors, but none of these seem to have been used recently.

Hopefully this helps you with planning a few trips on these buses!

From experience in the past you could find them on the 43 and 94 (normally a Solo though).

Avondale Buses have recently taken delivery of Dart DG52TYP for service work ex Pilkingtons via Ensign. Actually looks quite tidy. Ensign also reports selling another Dart to Galleon Travel BA52GHA.

I believe the only Aleros on the roads are converted party buses or camper conversions. Don't think there are any in public service anymore.

The sisters with Lloyd's (LK56 JKV/O, now registered RIG 3819/20) seem to get around their network, possibly as spare vehicles. RIG 3820 has had its seating upgraded though and sightings on the X28 (Machynlleth to Aberystwyth) or providing cover on the T12 (Machynlleth to Wrexham via Welshpool) don't seem too uncommon.

I believe Cumfybus still operated a pair of Optare Aleros as recently as the end of last year, but I'm unsure if they are/were used on public stage carriage work or private/school contracts.

Hams Travel operate Mk1 Pointer MC56 HAM, however (as you can tell from the reg) it was actually a development vehicle registered much later so I'm unsure how much is original underneath the bodywork.

That's a Mini Pointer Dart - of which a fair few are still in service with various operators all over the country.

Not sure if this is worth starting a new thread for, but would a thread of types of vehicles are "near extinction" - with just a handful still in service - be interesting?

I'd certainly be interested. I had no idea there were lots of MPD still running around!

As for Marshall Capital bodied Darts I think they're about extinct now unless there's a few preserved.

Plaxton Primos were cracking little buses but haven't seen 1 for a few years now.

Bromley Bus Preservation Group have one or two Marshalls, I believe. Potentially one on the Isle of Man too. Always loved them, and thought it was a pity there were never more.

The basic concept of the Primo was a good one, however they were not particularly well built and some aspects of the design such as the siting of the mirrors wasn't thought through very well. Our 6 ended up having the mirrors moved further up to stop them hitting everything.

I think Red Rose Y359LCK has been scrapped recently, it’s certainly untaxed. Y358LCK is still out and about occasionally though

Caetano Nimbuses can be found in Kent with Arriva Kent Thameside at Northfleet (1563 [RX07 KPJ] often to be found on 481/483) and with Hams (X9 HAM, previously AE54 HYV), which I last saw on a Tunbridge Wells town service.

Eh? Marshall bodied Darts were far inferior to Plaxton, ALX or any other combo. First cascaded loads to South West and Wales. Terrible quality

As for Primos, they were phenomenally unreliable and parts scarce. No shock most lasted less than 10 years

In addition to the Super Pointer Darts mentioned by @EnviroExplorer above, another that sees passenger service is SN53 AVG now with Arrowebrook Coaches, still wearing Ipswich Buses livery who had it after Lothian. I understand it’s a regular performer on their 26/26A Ellesmere Port - Chester - Guiden Sutton route.

Thank you so much for your replies to this. That is very helpful. It is good to see that some of them are still in use. I will plan some trips soon to take a ride on the few, Caetano Nimbus, East Lancs Myllennium, East Lancs Spryte, MCV Evolution, Plaxton Pointer MK2 SPD, bodied Dennis Darts that are still around and also on the Plaxton Primo too. So that is very helpful to know.

Looking at the tracking it seems that Cumfybus do not have any Optare Alero in public use any more.

So it seems like these ones are definitely all gone from public service (unless there are any hiding in use with small operators that we do not know about):

• Dennis Dart SLF Alexander ALX200

• Dennis Dart SLF Caetano Compass

• Dennis Dart SLF Marshall Capital

• Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK1 (Any Length) (other than the Hams Travel prototype vehicle and some Jersey step entrance ones)

• Dennis Dart SLF Wright Crusader

• Optare Alero

At least there is still a very large amount of Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK2 (other than the SPD version) buses around. Stagecoach still have lots. Compass Bus still have a few of them too. So i imagine these will still be around for a few more years.

The group of the closely related Aylesbury operators (eg, Red Eagle, Red Kite, Red Line, Red Rose, Star Travel, Vale Travel, Z & S Transport, etc) always seem to be good for interesting buses. They have always had lots of interesting buses. They finally have tracking now which makes them easier to find.

Arrowebrook of Chester have a Dart / Pointer still in use - SN53 AVG. Their only public route is the very occasional 26 from Guilden Sutton to Ellesmere Port. My nephew travels on the Dart for school and it's apparently hideously unreliable, so i'd check before making a journey across to see it.

Does anyone know if there are any bus operators who are still operating any of these types of buses in public service?

• Dennis Dart SLF Alexander ALX200

• Dennis Dart SLF Caetano Compass

Dennis Dart SLF Caetano Nimbus

• Dennis Dart SLF East Lancs Myllennium

• Dennis Dart SLF East Lancs Spryte

• Dennis Dart SLF Marshall Capital

• Dennis Dart SLF MCV Evolution

• Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK1 (Any Length)

• Dennis Dart SLF Plaxton Pointer MK2 SPD 11.3m

• Dennis Dart SLF Wright Crusader

• Optare Alero

• Plaxton Primo

It has been years since i have seen any of these in public service and i would like to take a ride on some of these again so i am wondering if any are still in use?
Yep, First Glasgow has a few left in service, you can mainly catch them on the services M11, 43, M60, & 81 for the most part.

Can also be found on the 59 and 64 on occasion too, alongside the remaining Pointers.

First Scotland East also have a handful from the same batch of Caetano Slimline Darts, all of these are ex-Jersey, being bought by First in 2012 for use with Midland Red & Eastern Counties IIRC, being shifted north from Kernow en-masse in 2018/19. Not sure if any of that lot are still in service, but 43861 has definitely been withdrawn and scrapped.

Latest image of a Scotland East Nimbus Dart in service I can find on Flickr dates from 30th December 2021 (linked below, copyright of graeme8665). I wouldn't be surprised if the ex-Kernow Solo SRs that were transferred north to Scotland East have either reduced the need for the Darts or replaced them outright.
