My friend's 18th birthday is in March and he needs to buy a season ticket to travel to school until July. I know that annual season tickets are valid until 4 months after the expiry of the season ticket but are monthly and weekly seasons still half price after the expiry of the railcard(his 18th birthday) until 4 months later?

Thank you so much as this would influence which season he would be buying.

Yes, exactly that:
Before the expiry date of the 16-17 Saver, customers may buy a Season Ticket valid for up to 4 months after their 18th birthday. Customers may therefore show an 'expired' 16-17 Saver to validate their discount on that Season Ticket for up to 4 months afterwards. This "Season Ticket expiry date" is shown on the 16-17 Saver, separate to the product expiry date.

So he can still buy half price seasons even after the date has expired, like, heading up to a ticket counter and asking for a half price weekly season in April, for example?

(just to clarify things up, I'm a bit dense)

No, that's not correct.

Once the card expires (either after a year or when the holder turns 18) no new tickets can be purchased.

A season ticket can be purchased before the main expiry date which expires up to 4 months after the card's main expiry date. This is clearly set out in the card FAQs:

However, if you buy a discounted Season ticket before your 16-17 Saver expires, you can continue to use your discounted Season ticket for up to four months after expiry of your 16-17 Saver, as long as your Season ticket is still valid. The 16-17 Saver will have two dates shown on it:

  • "Valid until" - which is the expiry date up to which you can purchase and use new tickets.
  • "Season Ticket valid until" - which is the last date that you can continue to use any valid discounted Season ticket for travel. This is four months after the expiry date of the card.

No, it must be bought before the expiry of the 16-17 Saver but can run up to 4 months after - this is clear from the first few words of the quote "Before the expiry date... customers may buy..."

No, that's not correct.
As the quote I posted clearly indicates!

Just to be clear in case you're not aware, apart from weekly, monthly and annual there is also the option of buying a season ticket for a custom period as long as it's longer than a month, priced at a rate roughly equivalent to the monthly rate. Hence instead of committing to particular dates now, your friend can buy weeklies/monthlies for now and then, just before his 18th birthday (making sure not to miss it!), buy a 4-month ticket (or however much he needs) to make use of the extra validity period of the railcard.
