I have a meeting near Chertsey station at 1pm on Wednesday 25th October. NRE says that the Off-Peak Return is £12.40 from Vauxhall to Chertsey, which is great, but I also need to cover the journey for the initial bus leg and the Arnos Grove to Vauxhall leg.

What is the cheapest ticket for this journey? I have no railcards or season tickets.

If you use Oyster or contactless for the bus and tube, that will cost £1.50 + £2.80 (offpeak) + £2.80 (offpeak) + £1.50 = £8.60 on top of the train ticket, so a total of £21. That compares with £20.30 for a Chertsey to London Zones 1-6 offpeak day travelcard (which is no good to you because you wouldn't be able to Chertsey back towards Zone 6 after having already done Zone 6 towards Chertsey).

As your profile says you are in New Southgate, an off-peak day return from New Southgate to Chertsey is £15.50, including tube transfer between Finsbury Park and Vauxhall. If you wanted to save even more money, a "Not Via London" ticket is £12.80, which would be a route of New Southgate-Highbury and Islington-Richmond-Staines-Chertsey.

A zone 1–6 off-peak day travelcard plus a boundary zone 6 to Chertsey off-peak day return is only £19.20 however, and is valid/intended for the direction of the OP's travel.

(It is my experience that SWT's boundary zone tickets are often reasonably priced, making one of them in combination with a travelcard good value for money, sometimes working out cheaper than a simple through ticket from a London origin.)

I did think about using a day travelcard - but it does suck a bit that people can't use them in the opposite direction. :/

Thank you - although, I don't live in walking distance to the station itself.

Thank you - that seems to be the ideal ticket. Where do I buy the two separate tickets - online or can I do it from the TVM in Arnos Grove?

If you have a bit of time then you can do it much cheaper. Arnos Grove to Finsbury Park, then Highbury & Islington, then Overground to Richmond and use paper from there to Chertsey.

Bus £1.50, Arnos Grove - Richmond £1.50 (£2.40 if return in afternoon peak), Richmond - Chertsey return £9.30.

Total £15.30 (or £16.20 if touch in at Richmond is between 1600-1900).
