I'm just wondering where you would usually find the Station Manager to ask for permission to take photos for personal use?

I've always spoken to a member of staff on platform to get permission, usually a "My train is at xxxx, would it be OK to take a few photographs of trains while I wait, I'll make sure I don't cause any problems and I wont use Flash Photography" at which I always have got a That's Fine reply

Only other time was when I asked a member of staff on the gate for a Platform ticket at a smaller station so I could Photograph a Class 68 at what point he was happy to let me though, if there was any issues then I should just quote his name as he will be either on the gate on at the Information Desk

There is no generic answer to this one; their office locations are pretty much different at each station - although it's generally likely to either be near to where the main entrance is or near to the main buildings if the main buildings are not near the main entrance.

You don`t need permission to take photographs on UK railway stations, Network Rail welcomes you and loves us very much, and only suggest that you let them know if you intend staying a while at a busy station. Generally you can sign in at a Network Rail office, some will give you a wonderful badge with your picture and trainspotter on it, bless them.

Well, not permission, but I assumed the OP meant the practice of making staff aware they were there.

I was at Carlisle last week for the arrival of the new Class 88 on a passenger service - loads of enthusiast and photographers there - I bet none of them "made staff aware that they were there"!

Why bother?

Spoke to GWR about Reading and Oxford stations as I wasn't able to find any policy on their website and got this reply:

Hi there. You would need to get permission from the station manager beforehand

Both of these stations I've never had issues at (See my first post about informing Platform Staff if I felt needed), in fact when the Class 707 was in test back in March the supervisor was more than happy to answer any questions and allowed me to take my time on the platform so long as I didn't cause any problems.

But I'm also (more aware now after reading through some of this forum) that policy is policy

I pretty much follow this policy (other than informing the Manager what I wasn't aware I needed to do)

Indeed, so i'm sure none of them would complain if they were asked to leave?

I should also mention that I would have zero issue with a member of staff asking me to move on, I always carry tickets, my ID and Railcard with me

Staff need to do their job so I would make it as easy as possible for them

So let me get this right, there are loads of enthusiast and photographers at Carlisle and staff are unaware of them,

I never ask for permission. I just try not to be an annoyance to passengers or staff. I follow directions they give me. I've only been told off once at Strood and that was for unknowing and unwillingly blocking the DOO mirror. However, if you insist on finding the DSM, I tend to find them on the busiest platform, or at smaller stations, the up platform.

EDIT: I go through open ticket barriers if I'm not travelling. If they're shut I buy a platform ticket. If I am travelling however, I always pay fares at the ticket office. Ticket machines at stations tend to charge you full anytime rates, and you could be saving a lot by going to the office.

EDIT 2: Sorry for bumping, didn't realise how old topic was!
