Can you buy first class tickets using a priv pass? (ie 75% off walk on fare or even an upgrade) I'm wanting to travel with virgin in case it matters

If your priv pass has first class facilities you can buy a priv rate first class ticket, this is displayed in the top right corner of the pass.

You could, however, get standard class tickets and a public rate first class upgrade (like weekend first).

Sorry but you are mistaken.

With the exception of weekend first, it is NOT possible to upgrade a PRIV Standard Class ticket to First Class.

It is possible to do this when travelling abroad using FIP facilities but not on National Rail

Well you could upgrade a Standard Class PRIV ticket to First Class, but it'd involve paying the difference up to the public First Class fare (except at the weekend on TOCs that offer Weekend First), which is almost certain to be more expensive than buying a new ticket.

For the avoidance of doubt you CANNOT upgrade a Standard Priv Ticket to First just by paying the difference between full price standard and first. This has been the bone of contention with the unions for many years.

No-one seems to have claimed this. Barrykas has said you'd have to pay the difference between the PRIV STD price and normal first class which is the same as you've said.

Having just checked the "Staff Travel" section of The Manual, it seems that you're supposed to issue a TIR as well as the Excess in the event of encountering a member of staff travelling in First Class when they're not entitled to do so!
