With the lockdown over again I had the chance to head out and get a few pics.

Beginning with 23/10

HCMT unit 11 departs Murrumbeena with a train for Caulfield. Due the seemingly endless work on the Pakenham/Cranbourne line trains were terminating at Caulfield.
During the last long lockdown the state government decided to expand the QR codes for contact tracing and put them on every single train, tram. bus, train station and some tram stops. Of course they're effectiveness is rather nil. No one uses them.
Here's one that's on X'trapolis 66M
On board Comeng 504M departing Flinders Street. Patronage a week or two after everyone could go out was still rather down.
504M departs Middle Footscray with a Watergardens train.
With more HCMTs in service the time has come to say goodbye to the Comeng fleet. At the time of writing 13 six car trains have been withdrawn from service. Here Steamrail's T395 and SSRs T386 haul Comeng 318M-1009T-317M-312M-1006T-311M to storage at Tottenham Yard. The push pull move is because the train has to reverse twice to enter the yard. A problem now fixed by being able to take the Newport-Tottenham freight line.
Comeng 552M departs Murrumbeena with a Cranbourne train
Comeng 457M departs Murrumbeena with a Caulfield train.
HCMT unit 11 departs Murrumbeena with a Caulfield train.

31/10

Siemens 736M departs Jewell with a City Loop Train.
Siemens 774M rounds the curve in Royal Park with an Upfield train. To the left is where the inner circle line once left the upfield line for Carlton and Fitzroy.

06/11

N454 stands at platform 3A with an FN set at Southern Cross with the 1300 Warnambool
VLocity VL55 stands on platform 2A at Southern Cross.
G512 and X31 lead QUBE logistics 9572 up Cement at Southern Cross.
A couple of minutes later N459 with VN set and power van in tow depart Southern Cross with a Shepperton train.
Passing by the MCG is X'trapolis 122M with a Werribee via City train.
Siemens 818M on a Frankston train rounds the curves in the former Jolimont Rail yards.
HCMT unit 9 on a Pakenham train.
Comeng 534M on a Werribee train at Newport.
X'trapolis 118M on a Mordialloc Via City train at Newport.
After a 19 year absence from the mainline Steamrail's K183 made a return in 2021 with a series of test runs and a surprise run on the Sandringham shuttles. Back in 2002 K183 was involved in collision at Benalla with a truck while operating a charter train. Sadly the driver, fireman and a person riding the footplate died.
In late 2020 Steamrail undertook an assessment of the locomotive and made the decision to restore it back to service.
A HCMT stands at Narre Warren with a Pakenham train. The train would be stationary for a while due to a police request at Berwick.

13/11

HCMT unit 22 arrives at Narre Warren on a gloomy Melbourne day with a Flinders Street Via City Loop train
Sitting at Appleton Dock is Pacific National's G522.
Around the corner in the Westgate sidings at Victoria Dock is QUBE logistics RL309 and 1101 with the cement train to Sydney.
V/Line's N460 is parked in the MotoRail dock at Southern Cross. This is one of 4 N class locomotives on standard gauge for the Albury train.
Sprinter 7008 sits in the Railmotor yard at Southern Cross. With most of the locomotives and carriages repainted V/Line have moved on to repainting the Sprinter fleet into the PTV livery.
Sitting stored on 25 road of the Bank sidings are luggage vans D332 and D339.
Power van PH454 waits it's next job in the Bank sidings.
Comeng 461M clatters over the points at Richmond Junction with a Sandringham train. Tread braked Northern(Alstom refurbished) Comeng trains are on borrowed time with most now having been withdrawn.
Going the other way is 459M nearing the end of its journey.
Another one of those sights soon to be history are Comeng trains on the Pakenham/Cranbourne Line. Here 629M leads a Pakenham train.
Beyond work in the city loop it's not often now you see citybound Pakenham/Cranbourne trains run direct. Due to a trespasser earlier Metrol have made the call to divert this train direct to Flinders Street.
Clattering over Richmond Junction is X'trapolis 42M with a Mordialloc Train.
Another loop bypass with Comeng 343 on the rear.

14/11

Another train making a long awaited return to the mainline are Elecrail's red rattler set. Tait cars 381M-208T-230D-317M pass through Narre Warren on a test run to Pakenham.
In the pouring rain is Siemens 777M at Richmond Junction
An X'trapolis passes by the MCG
The rain having somewhat cleared 607M leads a Mordialloc train
In typical Melbourne fashion the rain returns. HCMT unit 25 with a Pakenham train.
Returning to Flinders Street is the red rattler. After arriving at Flinders Street it would run up to Hurstbridge.
Attempting to steal the limelight is X'trapolis 183M with a Mordialloc train.
HCMT unit 24 on a Pakenham train.
Melbourne isn't known for having for having four seasons in one day. It was only taken a few hours later and the sun is out with HCMT unit 24 departing South Yarra on a Pakenham train.

20/11

Over a few months while the joint was locked down work never stopped bar a two week period on the level crossing removal project. Here we are at the new re opened Lilydale station.
X'trapolis 165M is on the flyover near East Camberwell with an Alemain shuttle.
The end of the lockdown saw the return of mainline steam. Steamrail's K190 leads a Ringwood-Camberwell sidings shuttle at East Camberwell.
Arriving on the down on the middle line is X'trapolis 69M. 69M has been fitted with trial LED headlights.
213M on the rear.
K153 trails the shuttle
At the Kensington flower mill SSRs T363 is just about finished unloading the grain from it's consist.
At the other end S317 sits in wait.
On the same day 707 operations R707 ran thier Picnic Express train with R707 and Y127. Here R707 arrives at Southern Cross.
In a surprise to many 707 operations painted Y127 in the 1980's V/Line orange and grey livery making it the first locomotive to wear the livery in preservation. Here it stands next to N455 in the current V/Line livery.

27/11

It's a week later and Steamrail are running another steam shuttle. This time to Sandringham. Here K153 leads the train through Windsor.
Later in the day we see a rare move. After a truck hit the Napier Street bridge Metrol instructed the driver of this Newport train to terminate at South Kensington and return to the city empty cars.
A week later at the Kensington Mill is SSRs P14 and S302.
K153 leads another shuttle departing Flinders Street.
K190 on the rear passing by the MCG
At the entrance of Bunbury Street tunnel sees S317-T363 leads a short grain consist to Tottenham Yard.
Not long later Pacific National's TT113-9323-NRxx prepare to set back into Dynon.
At the Westgate sidings VL360 is on the rear of a push pull consist. I think this was one of the consolidation trains on the Echuca line.
Pulling into Southern Cross is V/Line's A66 with a Dreamscape tours charter train to Kyenton.

11/12

Sitting at Appleton dock is SSR grain 1MC7 to Junee with CLP12-GM27-S311-CLF1
Around the corner quite literally is Pacific National's G528.
Later in the evening N456 departs Southern Cross with a VN set in tow.
VLocity 3VL85 arrives at Southern Cross
Departing on the second and final Dreamscape tours train is A66.
And finally the XPT with XP2017 in the lead departs bang on time with ST22 to Sydney.

Nice shots mate. What's the plan now for the Comengs - full withdrawal or just a thinning out?

The initial plan was 12-14 trains(24-28 3 car trains) to be with to be withdrawn in 2021. They've withdrawn 26 3 car trains. Once they finished with the odd bods they moved onto the Northern(Alstom refurb) tread braked ones. There's only 11 units left in service.

They might hold off a bit given the HCMT's are not without issues going off what I've been told. I've been giving them passenger feedback to get stuff fixed.
This is a common fault since they did a software update:
The door shouldn't be locking out like that.

The plan at the moment is there are 3 different stakeholders. Each will be scrapping a 3 car unit and the best way will be the ones to get rid of them. I'm guessing Metro are one stakeholder given they stripping a couple of them down at Newport.
SSR/BRM must be another one given a 3 car unit was sent to Bendigo Workshop. No idea who the 3rd one is. Might be the DOT.
