Booked a 1st class ticket on the 8am Birmingham New Street to Carlisle Service. Yet the reservation is in coach J where as i thought that was SP. (used ticket splitting site)
Do i need to change the seat reservation in order to get 1st class service, food etc

Coach J can vary from SP to First - if it has booked you into there then it will be a first class coach and you will receive the full service :)

Coach J and K is First Class except on Saturday/Sunday.

Coach J is Standard Premium on Saturday/Sunday

Coach K is First Class on Saturday/Sunday and you'd struggle to get a seat reservation as it's normally full given how few seats there are. Overspill passengers often end up sitting in part of J.

What day are you travelling? Weekends J is standard premium. Weekdays it should be 1st class.

And I have, on several occasions, seen people in that predicament being refused the first class food/drink service. Unbelievable stuff when you consider how much Avanti now charge for 1st - no more bargain Advances like before Covid!

Whichever genius thought 18 seats would be sufficient first class capacity on some of the most important intercity routes in the country needs their head examining.

Avanti also refuse to provide proper compensation on the countless occasions that staff shortages or logistics failures result in no food/drink service. I have frankly given up complaining because I know they will try to fob me off with a 25% off discount code that can't even be combined with a Railcard.

I now only bother using Avanti first class where it's included in my ticket anyway, e.g. on an Interrail pass.

I am wondering if I have wasted my money now.

Depends how much you have paid, I would say. I wouldn't pay much more than Standard Premium though (which attracts a £12.50 to £35 supplement over standard depending on the journey).

There are some exceptions to this on both the Glasgow and more limited the Manchester route where there isn't any standard premium available at all as the whole layout is 1st.
