Hi all,

On an LNER Azuma between Newcastle and York. Was tracking it on Realtime Trains out of curiosity and noticed that it has a 1 min performance allowance.

I’m curious - which trains manage to go so much faster that the Azumas need a 1 min performance allowance to keep up? Would have thought these would be at the cutting edge of speed since they’re brand new.

Cheers,
Scott

Performance Allowances are generally to promote overall network performance and resilience around busy nodes, to improve the right-time presentation of all services.

They are not about the ‘nippy-ness’ of individual train types.

That makes sense. Cheers :)

It has a tendency to be added by TOCs as well, normally NR won't add it in and you would be hard pressed to find a requirement in the TPR.

In Network Rail planning terms, do all additional time allowances fall under the three categories shown on Real Time Trains - Pathing, Performance & Engineering?

Pathing, Self explanatory.

Performance, As earlier post.

Engineering? Long Term TSRs or similar?

There are four. Adjustment, or {squiggle} time to account for junctions and approach control. RTT doesnt see that. Engineering, or [box] time to account for TSRs from engineering work. Pathing, or (circle) time to keep a headway or junction margin and performance, or <diamond> time which is the only case of "padding" as most seem to think the timetable is full of.

There are some, but very limited and specific instances. I believe there is a mandatory allowance somewhere on the Brighton main line and certainly something on LNE - at one point there was something for trains approaching the west end of Leeds but not sure that still exists, been a while since I’ve looked!

Depends if the pathing time is actually that, and not left in long after what was previously in front isn’t in the timetable any more.

If people had the time to interogate each schedule prior to every LTP offer then it would get removed. Its predominantly freight where this happens and If its not causing a problem its going to roll over.
