I'm planning a quick trip from France to travel on the Highland lines.

I guess many of you have done the same and can recommend decent but reasonably priced B & B's near to the railway stations in Oban, Fort William, Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness.

My preference is for Oban and Kyle of Lochalsh, I've never been overkeen on Fort William or Inverness.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome , such as a decent pub in Mallaig or Thurso etc !

Thanks !

P.S

Any other tips would be appreciated- I'll be using a ScotRail Highland Rover.

I'd highly recommend the Clachain Inn in Mallaig. I've stayed there a couple of times. Less than 5 mins walk from the station http://www.westscotlandinn.co.uk/accommodation.asp

If you have time I'd recommend the ferry Malliag to Armadale (Skye) and then the bus from Armadale to Kyle and train on from there.

I was looking into that option, but couldn't find the bus times from Armadale. Ideally I'd like to travel on The Jacobite !

The one I have always fancied is the bunk house on Bridge of Orchy station. Never stayed but look nice on the way past.

I stayed in a good BandB in Roy Bridge about 18 months ago about 10 mins walk from the station.

I would also recommend the tour via Skye. Oh yes doing that tomorrow. Buses much better in the summer. Long waits at Broadford in the Winter.

It is possible to stay south of Fort William catch the sleeper to Fort William, steam to Mallaig, Ferry to Armadale, Bus to Kyle of Lochalsh and still catch the 17:15 to Inverness.

If you have some time(most of the day) between your mallaig-Armadale ferry and the Kyle train then you could do a tour of skye (Only £7 for the Bus but Castle and distillery extra)

That's the mutts-nuts ;)

I really hate visiting somewhere like Skye in such a hurry. I spent a good few weeks climbing there as a teenager. I just can't persuade the wife that Skye would make a great holiday destination !

This has made my coming Monday tonnes easier, thanks!

Thanks for all the info, has made my trip planning a lot easier as well.

Anyone got any recommendations for somewhere within easy reach of Kyle Of Lochalsh station?

Back from my quick-trip on the Highland lines and very enjoyable it was, too !

In Oban , I stayed at the Heatherfield Guest House. As I was travelling alone, single occupancy was expensive, but here, it was certainly worth it !
The room was spacious, with even a short entrance hall leading to the bedroom and seperate bathroom. A few nice touches included quality toileteries and a few goodies to eat ! The breakfast was probably the best I've ever had. As well as the usual cereals etc there was a seasonal fresh-fruit salad ( raspberries, strawberries, blueberries) which went down very nicely with the 'fromage-blanc'. I followed this with a good classic 'full breakfast', but the salmon/scrambled eggs was on offer. There was also breakfast scones and a few local cheeses with oatmeal biscuits !

This B & B gets over 100 similar commentaries on TripAdvisor. 100 people can't be wrong ! Highly recommended 5/5 !

For my second night , I went over to Skye. There wasn't a single room to be had in Mallaig ! Again I put my trust in Tripadvisor, but the result certainly wasn't as good ! The Seaview Guest House at Broadford was very pleasant, with a warm welcome from the owners that was very encouraging. Unfortunately I wasn't offered the 'en-suite' room I had asked for and found the attic-room I had, a little 'poky'. It was however, spotlessly clean and the bed, very comfortable. I'll happily spend an hour in the bath , so en suite is a must ! Breakfast was very good, everything you expected ! I chose the oven-baked salmon with scrambled egg, which was very tasty !So despite my initial disappointment , The Seaview still merits a 3.75/5 !

My third night was spent in Thurso, at the Pentland Lodge Guest House. I arrived late on the last train, but the owners organised a taxi for me and I was soon being shown my room ! This was the only place a single room was available which was spacious , with a lovely bathroom. The whole guest house had recently been refurbished through-out. It was too late for a meal in a pub or restaurant, so I asked the owner where I could find some takeaway. The nearest being a Chinese, I had this ! The owner said I could eat in my room and provided me with a plate, knife and fork etc ! Breakfast was excellent, a good choice and more on offer if you were still hungry !
Again, this B & B gets good ratings/comments on TripAdvisor and deserves 5/5 !

Sorry if this is dragging on a bit, but it is the kind of information/ recommendation that I often look for and as such, it might be useful to others !
