My mate buys a monthly travelcard from Beaconsfield to Zones 1-6 for £363 a month, is there any way to lower this? I've tried finding other cheaper alternatives but to no avail.

Has he ever thought of getting off the Chiltern at West or South Ruislip then taking the Central line from there to save the cost of having to pay for zone 1 as well.

He does, but comes back via Marylebone. I've told him to use Oyster from West Ruislip to Shepherds Bush.

Doing that with a weekly Beaconsfield to Zones 2 to 6 travelcard would cost £73.30, which should work out at £281.50 for a month.

And as a travelcard from outside the Zones can be purchased for any period between a month and a year, careful planning (e.g. by buying a ticket starting on a Monday and ending on the Friday that is a month and a couple of days later, or by buying a ticket for a month and a couple of weeks so that it ends on the day before the passenger goes on holiday) can reduce costs further as days of non-use are not being paid for.

Chiltern trains that stop at the Ruislips usually stop everywhere else as well. That's even before the slow run down the Central Line to Shepherds Bush.

But if time isn't an issue, there appears to be a saving.

Overall journey time changing at West Ruislip would be 45 to 50 minutes, compared with 31+ minutes Beaconsfield-Marylebone plus time on the underground to Shepherds Bush. Not obviously much difference.
