I'm going to Beamish Museum on Saturday, hoping to go by train to Newcastle, bus to the museum then on by bus to Durham to get the train back.

The museum website suggests services operated by Waggonway, Go North East and Coast and Country. Are these actually all part of Go North East, in which case could I expect to get a day ticket of some sort?

It also offers 25% off for Go North East bus passengers, which would be a fantastic discount.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

The Waggonway and C&C are brands of Go North East

Get into the "pit village" early and enjoy the chippy ;)

The bus from Newcastle isn't the most direct sadly. Not sure what train you're using but if you can alight at Chester le Street it's much easier. The Waggonway is a local service which replaced several other routes and takes two very long routes. If you can get Waggonway 28 as opposed to 28A, though the 28A is more scenic.

A green and purple zone buzzfare (£6.40) will cover all of your journeys.

To catch the bus head your nearest stop is outside St Nicholas Cathedral. Turn right outside Central Station and keep on walking. Buses are half hourly. If you are spending anytime in Newcastle, the terminus is Eldon Square bus station

Thanks again for your excellent answers.

There's a direct bus on summer Saturdays (128) from Durham to Beamish, which I have used, but unfortunately it doesn't run in the winter. Otherwise, you'll have to change, e.g. at Chester-le-Street.

If you want to return via Durham, you will need to change buses. The journey time is around 50 minutes either way

Catch a half hourly 8 or 8a to either Chester le street (eastbound) or Stanley (westbound). Note that these buses only serve the Museum gates until around 5pm, however after that you can still catch them from the bus stop near the 'Lion and Lamb' public house (not a bad pint and a canny place for a meal ;) ) a couple of minutes walk away.

From Chester le Street to Durham buses are very frequent- Service 21 operated by B5LH Hybrid deckers or service X21 with high spec Wright Streetdecks. There is also the slightly slower 50/50A worked by Omnicities.

Going via Stanley bus station, You will get to Durham using serve 16, 16A (every 15 mins daytime). Brand new Wright Streetlites work this service if that's your thing! This is arguably the more scenic route to Durham. HTH

Edit- I have no idea if you are into Real Ales, but if you are, the eastbound services all pass 'The Beamish Mary', a unique and excellent pub in the unusually named 'No Place'. Top beer, friendly punters, bizarre bric a brac!
