I saw this last night passing through Sheffield, the containers were lettered 'Recycling for Manchester'.

I was waiting for the late running 19.24 XC service to Birmingham and this came through Pl.6 at about 19.45, The XC service must have been stuck behind it although the delay was attributed to signalling problems between Darlington and York.
When we departed Sheffield at 19.50, the liner train was in the loop, presumably waiting for a path across at Dore.

Where does it actually come from, does it run to a regular timetable?

The train you saw was running empty from Oxwellmains (Dunbar) to Bredbury.

Only runs via Sheffield on a Saturday, so you were lucky to see it! :)
