Birmingham New Street

Sorry for this basic question.

When travelling from Warrington to Exmouth - I change at Birmingham New Street - usually platform 1 to platform 11.

The change over period is often very tight ,and I always seem to be delayed by negotiating the various ticket barriers - sometimes I have a disabled person travelling with me in a wheelchair.

I know a quicker way is to go to the back of the station - is the back of the station in the direction of my incoming train from Warrington? Or the opposite direction to my incoming train from Warrington?

The footbridge is at the B end end of the platforms, which is at the rear of trains coming in from the Wolverhampton direction. I'm fairly sure it's stairs only though.

It might be worth investigating if you can change at Wolverhampton instead.

If you're on a 9 or 11 coach service, your best position for the B end bridge is probably around 2-3 coaches from the rear, so maybe move to that area when you're about ten minutes away from New Street, if it's not too crowded to do so.

Sadly most, if not all trains from Birmingham towards Exeter for Exmouth start from the North East, so that isn't possible.

I'm not sure why the twice a day Manchester to Paignton services don't seem to be running at the moment.

There are two options at the B end of the platforms. One is a very basic footbridge, which you are referring to. However, the other is the main connections concourse, which has escalators and lifts, and is very easy to use.

Thank You for your replies - tomorrow I will be travelling by myself so I can make my way to the rear of the train as duffield suggests.

The connection time should be ok, but the train at Warrington is usually delayed, and the Plymouth train (not that I am complaining ) is usually on time.

Pity there is no lift at the rear of the station for when I travel with the wheelchair user.

Getting through the barriers was always the hardest part of the journey!
