Hi everyone,

Many years ago I remember seeing BOC tankers hauled by pairs of class 76s crossing the Pennines. When that route closed they switched to class 40 haulage via the Hope Valley. Can anyone tell me what killed off the trains and when they stopped running? Years later I read a report that some of the redundant tankers had ended up at Barnetby.

Thanks for reading this

They did end up at Barnetby. Some more information in this thread on RMWeb: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/38075-boc-tankers/
and on this site: http://www.leightonlogs.org/boctanks.htm
Don't know why or when they stopped running, but the carriage of chemicals/gases by rail really dropped off from the levels seen in the 1980s.

Edit: a quick google and the PDF at
https://www.oliviastrains.com/wp-co...100-Ton-Bogie-Tank-Wagon-Web-Site-Version.pdf
says they ran until the late 1990s, and has a lot more of info on the decline of dangerous goods on rail

Most interesting thread this, its a great shame the OP has only just joined us really, as it's just struck me that a previous former long standing member of this forum posted a lot of interesting stuff covering virtually the same areas of interest as you. I imagine you would have got on really well with him, especially on the subject of the S&C and the common liking for the Dent area in particular.

The Barnetby ones weren’t quite redundant when they went there, though it was decided after they were shunted it was too much trouble to get them back out again. Something about a shunting incident according to the man responsible.....
