Booking journey with a longer connection time

Knowledgeable People,

I am travelling Exeter to Glasgow. All train company sites offer me Cross Country to Birmingham then Avanti to Glasgow with a connection time, typically of 12 minutes.

Given current conditions this seems risky. I hope to buy the cheapest, advance tickets

If I miss the Avanti to GLA due to late running from EXD am I allowed to get the next available service to GLA ? If not is there a way to book the trip but specifying a longer connection time at BHM ?

TIA,

DE

Booking engines have an option for increasing connection times. You just need to find where the options are hidden.

Next Avanti service, yes.

Yes - this is usually in the advanced options of many ticketing sites. The forum's site is: https://tickets.railforums.co.uk/ and the "More Options" button will let you input longer connection times. The site will also split your tickets, if doing so would save you money on the through fare.

You can put in some pretty big numbers, and sometimes strange things will happen. I once asked for a 4 hour connection time at Birmingham New Street with a Cross Country Advance single which involved changing trains there and was duly booked on the two appropriate trains with the > 4 hour break. Of course break of journey is not allowed on a Advance single, so strictly speaking should not leave the station for any non-travel reason, but - whatever.

What's the longest you can have as a longer connection time?
There are some minor lines with services about every 3 hours, if you start and end on one of these obscure lines, then can get some 2+ hour connections (even if didn't want to wait that long)

I've got a split ticketing site to give a single advance ticket from Cheltenham Spa to Coleshill Parkway for the 07:54 Cheltenham Spa to 08:45 Birmingham New Street then the 19:22 Birmingham New Street to Coleshill Parkway, but asking to leave at e.g. 17:58 with a ten hour connection time leads to the ticket being split at Birmingham instead.

I meant like what is the longest amount of minutes you can input into Trainsplit for example?
There's no enforced cap on the beta site, but you'll struggle to get any results after a certain amount. I often struggle to get results with anything over about 500-600 minutes.
