Hello Everyone

I am having a serious declutter and have a number of bound editions of Trains Illustrated and Modern Railways to get rid of. Excellent condition.

Will be happy to GIVE WITHOUT CHARGE to first person who comes to me in Kilburn London NW6 to collect. All copies or none. I believe they have a high intrinsic as well as monetary worth.

Following years available:

Trains Illustrated 8 years 1953 - 1961 (1954 missing)
Modern Railways 20 years 1962 - 1982 (1975 missing)

If you have a serious interest please contact me and we can exchange mobile numbers.

Kind Regards

Tim Bloomfield

Am closing this offer now as I've surprisingly received no interest and am instead sending then to a friend.

Kind Regards

Go to many heritage railway shops and there are huge piles of magazines hopefully awaiting a buyer, even at nominal prices. With so many thousands of copies produced in the past 50+ years, I suspect that only pre-WW2 magazines have significant resale value.

Having recently donated nearly 50 years worth of Railway Modeller to a local heritage line, after enquiring of one of the major secondhand retsilers, I can confirm that they are of surprisingly little commercial value.

I would have loved to make up the gaps in my collection, but even after decluttering I have a space issue, not to mention that NW6 is a long way from the NW!

I'd have liked some, but wouldn't have been able to carry them all onto the trains to York! Thanks anyway.

I volunteer on a Heritage Railway and (sadly) only pre WW2 (or immediate post WW2) and current year magazines have any resale value.

We sell magazines for 20 pence and the stock grows year on year.

Videos (ie vhs cassette) also have virtually zero value.

DVDs fetch about 50 pence each.

Books vary but again the very common books have virtually no value. Pre War and rarities do a little better. We are Southern Region so books about the SR and its antecedents and successors do better.

I seriously question whether selling mags etc is worth the effort or actually gives the general public a negative perception of our activities.

I've attempted to sell various railway magazines on Ebay over the years and the only ones for which I've found a market are Back Track and Railway Bylines. Perhaps it's because the articles in them are historic so the content doesn't become dated, unlike the more news-orientated titles.

That said, I find the Railway Magazine and the like from the 1950s, 60s and 70s a fascinating read and I'm surprised they aren't more popular.

Good point.

The Backtrack and the Railway Byelines are the ones that sell the best on the second hand book stall but sadly we don't get a better price for them.

Continental Modellers never seem to shift.

I do feel that if the publishers put their back issues onto a CD they would find a reasonable market.

I agree I would buy.

It would enable so many boxes of mags etc to be recycled from the loft / spare bedroom etc.

I rather enjoy Modern Railways. A great balance of feeding my interest but dense enough to help me sleep! My son keeps asking me about railway technology and it's useful to be one step ahead of him.

I don't want to resurrect an old thread, but can anyone help me find anyone that has scanned Modern Railways for the 1970s/80s or even small parts -- I'm not sure if you can send a personal message on here but would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Ben
