I'm looking at getting a super off peak single from Kings Cross to Dundee. I'd like to stop for a couple of hours in Edinburgh. I know the ticket allows me to break my journey, but can I get any train from Waverley to Dundee or does it need to be an off peak train? I might get the 1601 train to Dundee.

That ticket has the following restrictions:
Not valid for departures from:
  • London Terminals (except as shown below) after 02:59 and before 09:06 and after 14:59 and before 18:59 (18:15 on Fridays);
  • London Liverpool Street after 04:29 and before 09:30 and after 16:29 and before 18:34;
  • London St Pancras International after 04:29 and before 10:05 and after 15:34 and before 18:47;
  • London Euston after 04:29 and before 09:05;
  • Stevenage after 02:59 and before 09:19 and after 15:07 and before 19:01 (18:35 on Fridays);
  • Luton after 02:29 and before 10:25 and after 15:23 and before 19:23;
  • Luton Airport Parkway after 02:29 and before 10:51 and after 15:08 and before 19:10;
  • Bedford after 04:29 and before 10:30;
  • Watford Junction after 04:29 and before 09:00;
  • Milton Keynes Central after 04:29 and before 09:00.
Only the first bullet point is relevant, and means you can't take the 21:53 LNER Edinburgh to Dundee, which departs London at 16:00. Any ScotRail train is fair game, as it does not depart from the listed stations.

Although in practice it seems highly unlikely to me that anyone would try and enforce 'peak' restrictions at that time of day from Edinburgh.

Agree, I always thought this referred to if you were boarding from London and if you were boarding later it was after 9.30am. In practice, there won't be an issue. Just make it clear boarded Edinburgh if asked, as can be staff change Edinburgh and may think came through from London

Scotrail don’t (currently) have peak times at all do they?

On fares they control, yes. But as we've long said on this forum, the restrictions apply based on the ticket rather than any blanket policy.

In this particular case, clearly ScotRail are unlikely to be enforcing any peak restrictions at the moment (e.g. at barriers) but the principle bears repeating.

That's really helpful - thanks! If I'm leaving Edinburgh after 9pm something has gone badly wrong - and sounds like a 4pm-ish train will count as off peak
