Please can someone advise me where I can find details of the total route mileage and number of employees of British Railways in 1950 and also in 1979?

I have tried searching in google but cant seem to find either a table or definitive values.

Amy help greatly appreciated.

I don't have any figures for either 1950 or 1979, but in a strange coincidence, I do have a copy of Whitakers Almanack for 1967 open in front of me - here's their take on BR in 1966, which is just about half way through the period you're interested in. I'm sure someone will be along soon with the info you're looking for.

You can find the mileage figures in the HMSO Annual Abstract of Statistics. 1950 was 19,471 route-miles, and 1979 was 11,020 route-miles. According to the second volume of Gourvish's history ("British Rail 1974−97 From Integration to Privatisation") p.489 total staff in 1979 were 244,084. I haven't got a figure for 1950 — you'd find it in the relevant annual report or in the little Facts & Figures brochure that was published every year in that period.
