Kings Lynn - Peterborough (via Excel bus) - York/Newcastle/Edinburgh
Kings Lynn - Exeter - Bude
These are journeys I take several times a year.
BR fares show a number of off-rail destinations such as those above. The available tickets however seem to be reduced each year.
The LNER website no longer recognises KLB as a destination, even though the fare is set by that company, and theoretically fares exist to most East Coast destinations.
Similarly you could buy rail tickets from Exeter to St Davids to Bude for use on the Stagecoach bus(route 6), but when I try to book them on the GWR website, none are available on the dates I choose.
My quibble is that both these trips involve a long bus journey (1/ 1/2-2 hours) added to a long rail journey. If for instance I am returning from Bude, I would have bought a rail bus ticket to Exeter and then a Saver ticket onward, the point being that both journeys are covered by the Conditions of Carriage so that if the bus is late, I am able to catch a later train using my pre-booked Saver ticket.
If I just buy a ticket on the bus and it is delayed, I then have to buy another train ticket to continue my journey.
I have written to LNER and they seem oblivious to the problem. They suggest travelling via Ely at greater expense on a very unreliable line. I intend writing to GWR but I am not anticipating a more positive response.
Many of these bus add-on tickets were conceived at a time when it was thought desirable to have a through ticket to popular off-rail destinations. Why is this now being gradually abandoned?
My questions are:
Why are bus destinations now being deleted from websites?
If these fares are set and updated each year, why are they not available to buy?
Is there any Company website that still sells tickets to all destinations including bus?
