Once the lockdown has ended, public transport is going to struggle commercially to get back to previous usage levels.
Bus services in particular are likely to be the hardest hit with potential frequency reductions and service withdrawals.
I foresee bus route franchising as the only outcome in many areas of the UK to retain any kind of decent network.
To try and entice people back onto public transport I feel that we need to have some major bus routes incorporated into rail journey planners with decent connections offered and through ticketing available.
1. Are there any existing through ticket and advertised connecting buses on rail industry journey planners?
e.g York - Whitby?
2. Are there currently any high quality bus services which could easily be added to rail journey planners and through ticketing offered?
e.g Penrith - Keswick?
Bangor - Caernarfon- Porthmadog
3. Are there other routes that really should be adjusted/diverted to serve railway stations and then be added to rail journey planners and through ticketing offered?
e.g Wisbech - March
This could save millions on umpteen feasibility studies for reopening lines that most people already know would be financial basket cases because of the enormous infrastructure costs of reinstating the rail link.
I look forward to seeing all your suggestions for points 1, 2 and 3!
