The New Camp Hill Line, linking the City Centre and South Birmingham, due to open December 2023 I believe, I was wondering if a route table number is alocated for it yet and also the new local rail staion codes?

Thanks in advance.

How frequent will the service be? Also, will it be a rerouting of a current service or a new shuttle service?

AFAIK it’s a 2tph service operated from Birmingham New Street to King’s Norton. Supposedly operated by class 196s.

Had a feeling that might be the case. Even though they were quite insistent they would be just a few weeks ago.

What is the ETA looking like? It's not going to turn out like the rebuild of University, is it?
The recent blockade of the Camp Hill was for them to catch up, though I dont know how far they have recovered yet. I would be putting a few quid on early 2024.

Its also why the Cross City can't return to 6tph.

HI, Our new CampHill Line will be running from New Street to Kings Norton platform 2. which will brought back into use. the Service what we have been told will be two trains per hour each way, and class 196, 4 car DMU, but the new rail stations will be able to take 6 car trains. and also what we know so far the service will be up and running from this December 2023, our local rail station Pineapple road is due for completion around this autumn 2023 and the other two stations are underway too, plus has been some new track laying along the route too.

Delay to completion of the stations seemingly confirmed in this BBC News story.
Camp Hill: Further delays to south Birmingham railway line

New railway stations and passenger services in Birmingham have been hit by further delays.

It was originally hoped the Camp Hill line in the south of the city would be ready for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

However West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said it would take "a little while longer", adding the news was "disappointing".

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) said it was now aiming to open the line by the end of 2024.

The £61m project, funded predominantly by the WMCA but with additional funding from the Department for Transport and Birmingham City Council, will see passenger services open on the line for the first time in decades.

Since 1941 the line has only been used by freight and through-services.

There will be three new stations in Moseley Village, Kings Heath and Stirchley, with the final station to be named Pineapple Road after a public vote.

Mr Street, the region's Conservative mayor, said there was "tangible progress" at the stations with platforms "taking shape".

However the WMCA said contractors had met "a series of challenges" during works including an unstable wall, a historic well and a protected species.

The Victorian well, linked to Highbury Hall in Kings Heath, was undocumented and meant the area had to be redesigned, a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile the unstable wall, near the Pineapple Road stop, needs to be rebuilt "brick by brick" and the protected species, found in Moseley, can only be moved at certain times of year.

Neil Gaskin, from Network Rail, said the stations would be "worth the wait", adding: "We will continue to work with our partners to support them opening as soon as possible."

Is it expected to generate enough usage to justify a half hourly service of 4-car trains?

Love the way Badgers are span as the protected species.
As we have learnt on the Conwy valley thread, you need a licence to interfere with a badger sett - getting one presumably takes time (particularly if someone objects, I guess)

I don't think so. It is not possible to get on to the Camp Hill line from the currently disused P2. Even under the long term plan the Camp Hill trains would run from a new bay platform (P3) cut into the existing disused island platforms. In the short term I believe the service will start and end on the existing P4 (the Longbridge platform by the car park).

I highly expect they will exceed the usage of, for example, some stations on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line like Codsall and Albrighton. These stations get half-hourly services at peak times, usually with 4 car 196s (which are also expected to be used here), with a direct link to central Birmingham, which may be more in fact be more useful for the areas here in South Birmingham.

And one only has to take a look at how many passengers southern Birmingham Cross-City line stations get.
