Hi there, currently I have a job as a cabin crew manager- while not the most interesting job it is very stable, unionized and has good time off.

However, I really want to make the pivot into the railways (southern/ GTR) since live in the south coast.

Due to all of the nationalisation plans would any front line roles be in for the chop?

I have seen an ad for future station managers as well on their site.

Cheers

I think it's unlikely any staff redundancies will come from the front line.

I know of plenty of people from the aviation industry (particularly cabin crew) who have gone on to have successful railway careers.

I would say unlikely. Most TOCs I have seen are having a employment drive I expect because the GOV have said they are going to want to have more staff when takeover happens

Haven't you already tried to make this pivot - I note you applying for station manager a few months ago?

I doubt front-line roles like gateline/guard/driver will be on the line, but ticket offices might be and of course the issue of DOO trains might rear it's head again under nationalisation which might make train guard / manager roles a little less certain

Unlikely much will change with the operations side of the railway, but office based roles and those not essential to the running of the railway have always been more vulnerable. Previously certain roles were protected by franchise agreements etc.

Nobody knows - everything we could discuss would be pure speculation.

I’d suggest that management grades would be more at risk than operational grades; I’d suggest @Stigy’s summary above is a fair statement to make.

Given there isn’t really an answer to your question, I’m going to bring this thread to an early close.

If you’d like to pick up more questions specific to the GTR Station Manager role, please do so in your existing thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/gtr-station-manager-recruitment-questions.276075/#post-7002653
