I've done twp Tuesday - Wednesdays and one Thursday - Friday within the last year. I must say that Tuesday - Wednesday seems to throw out a lot of 92s and 86, and I would reccomend this night, however, no nights are exactly bad.

Expect it to be a bit boring from 0200 till about 0500 mind, on any night.

Well looking at the diagrams, there is relatively alot of freight every night, but there are quite a few that run Thursdays only.

Friday morning there are nuclear flasks... thats 20s/37s
By the loks of things everything is mainly 66 hauled.
There are some 92s... 90s on the sleepers... some possible 60s... 86s... Virgin 57 on timber, (runs as required)... Also 325 mail units

I SERIOUSLY RECCOMEND you find someone to go with, you will be bored out of your mind on your own.

Ok i was looking at your pics yesterday and see thing is i don't know anybody thats into trains except one person from birmingham but it would be to short notice now to meet him there for thursday and he works but everywhere i go, i go myself, but i don't mind being myself.

You need to ideally sign in with the station manager if you are doing an overnighter - they kick you out otherwise.

I remember when I got off of the sleeper at Preston to take some photos - a member of VT staff just casually asked if I was spending the night - despite the fact I didn't have shoes on, and the sleeper was next to me...

You don't have to sign in....on my first overnighter, we forgot to even tell anyone we were there, no problems had whatsoever.

Second two we remembered, and the DSM was fine with it both times.

So all night are the station lights left on? and is it like steady frieght trains passing through or is it blibs and blobs where they all come at once or not at all kinda thing?

Yeah the lights are left on, for all the changing crews mainly.

It should be reasonably busy 2100-0130, after the first sleeper it tends to quieten down.

Do VT staff the station overnight, or is it like a cookoo clock, where staff appear and open the station to allow passengers to board and alight from the sleepers, then go back into the mess room until the next train.

Well I was only there while the Caledonian sleeper was there, so I'd assume the latter!

Do the trains stop long enough when theres a crew change where you could ask the driver for a cab photo or ask them to put cab lights on while you take a photo? (because it looks better when lights are on)

Well it would depend on how early they are... if they're running early and you ask nicely they'd probably let you have a quick look around. The first caledonian sleeper of the night is often held there for a good 10 mins go you can at least get a 90.
