Hello

I intend to go to York from Carlisle on 13 November, returning 15th November with a break of journey of a few hours at Horwich.

I have an super off peak return fare of £49.80 (1 adult, no cards) via Newcastle and, if I put in 'via Manchester' I get the same fare, which would be fine of course and so I assume the route is ok and is my choice.

1) Is my assumption correct?
2) Given this is 'walk up' fare breaking the journey on the way back is ok, yes?
3) I can find restrictions on the outward leg about times (after 0930) but none on the return leg, yes?

thanks as ever.

1) Is my assumption correct?

Yes. It is valid on map combination NW+GM+WY+LY and the ticket is route ANY PERMITTED.

trainscanbecheaper.info said:
Permitted routes from CARLISLE to YORK route ANY PERMITTED
  • CARLISLE is a routeing point.
  • YORK is a routeing point.
The following are ALWAYS Permitted routes:
  • Any direct trains advertised from CARLISLE to YORK in the current timetable
  • The shortest route with a regular train service, not including walks and transfers (138.51 miles): Show route in detail
    • CARLISLE
    • Hellifield Group
    • Leeds Group
    • YORK
The following are Permitted unless there is an easement preventing them:

2) Given this is 'walk up' fare breaking the journey on the way back is ok, yes?

Yes. Break of journey is permitted in either direction.

3) I can find restrictions on the outward leg about times (after 0930) but none on the return leg, yes?

There are restrictions on the return leg. You can find them on brfares: http://brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=CAR&dest=YRK&rlc=%20%20%20&rte=0&ldn=0&tkt=SSR

No problem.

Remember that with that ticket you would be free to go one way and come back another. So you could, for example, go via Newcastle and come back via Manchester and Horwich Parkway.

You have to love our fares system. A Preston to Newcastle off peak return costs £69.20 and is valid via both York and Carlisle.

Essentially, you can make Preston, York, Newcastle and Carlisle a big square, yet travelling from top left to bottom right (Carlisle to York) is significantly less that bottom left to top right (Preston to Newcastle).

You could cover the exact same route. Amazing.

Indeed. Search around the fares between stations in the North West and those in the North East on http://brfares.com.

Then, when you've found a likely looking ticket at a good price, have a look at the routeing guide to find possible circular routes. You'll probably find loads. The "show permitted routes" function of http://trainscanbecheaper.info can probably help you here.

I'm sure you'll find loads better than £69.20 if you put a little time into it. If you're really interested, sign up to one of the free fares workshops we run, where you can learn about the fares and routeing system in rather more depth.

Note that even though break of journey is permitted in this case, this is not the case for all walk-up fares as you presumed.

Each ticket has a restriction code (shown mostly clearly on brfares.com) which may or may not restrict break of journey.
