Good evening,

the Caledonian Sleeper to Glasgow & Edinburgh divides at Carstairs which is also a set-down only stop.

The CS's timetable says that both portions call at Carstairs, but the NR and FGW journey planners suggest only passangers on the Glasgow portion can alight there. If I put London-Edinburgh, it shows no calls between Carlisle and Edinburgh.

The same goes for the opposite direction. Which information is correct? And, theoretically, what can stop you alighting at Carstairs from the Edinburgh portion of the sleeper?

Thanks

Physically: I suspect the doors may only be released on the Glasgow portion?

Financially: You'd probably get charged the full standard single fare for the full journey to / from the next or previous booked public stop for the portion, depending on which direction you were going in.

The platforms at Carstairs aren't as long as the full sleeper rake. I suspect that the seated coaches in the Edinburgh portion might not be against a platform edge when the 2 portions are combined.

You won't get the full train in the platform at Carstairs, so I expect it is only the doors on the Glasgow portion that are opened. If you can walk through the train you could probably get on/off, but if you can't you won't.

As you usually need a reservation for the sleeper, I doubt you'd get a seat in the wrong portion.

Thanks for your replies.

So someone who just looks at the Edinburgh timetable and decides to alight at Carstairs will inevitably get booked on the Glasgow portion of the train?
